This year, the international community will pause to remember those who died, as well as the dozens of aid workers, who have died in the years since. But World Humanitarian Day is also an opportunity to celebrate the spirit that inspires humanitarian work around the globe. This year the UN and its humanitarian partners are launching a ground-breaking campaign with the theme "The World needs more …"

    Sangam University has established a rich tradition of celebrating various days of national as well as global importance such as International Youth Day (IYD), Teachers Day, International Literacy Day, Voluntary Eye Donation Day, Voluntary Blood Donation Day, Hindi Diwas Day, Engineers Day, International Ozone Day, International Day of Peace, World Tourism Day, UN International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, UN Day, National Education Day, National Law Day, International Volunteer Day, National Mathematics Day, National Youth Day, National Girl Child Day, National Science Day, Earth Day, International Dance Day (IDD), World Press Freedom Day and Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore Jayanti.

    On 19 August 2013, Sangam University celebrated United Nations World Humanitarian Day. Addressing the students and faculty in the lush green lawns of Sangam University, Prof BR Natarajan President - Vice Chancellor gave an overview of the significance of the day and read out the message of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon message for the day "Every year on August 19th we mark World Humanitarian Day in honour of aid workers, who have lost their lives in the line of duty. We commemorate their sacrifice and reaffirm our commitment to the lifesaving work that humanitarians carry out around the world every day, often in difficult and dangerous circumstances, where others cannot or do not want to go. This year our World Humanitarian Day campaign is calling on people to answer a question: 'What do you think the world needs more of?'"

    Prof Natarajan pointed out that while the world at large undoubtedly needed more of Happiness, Sustainability, Team Work, Peace, Healthcare, Education, Understanding, Clean Air, Drinking Water, Food, Clothing, Housing etc, what was needed most was more youngsters coming voluntarily forward to help others as World Humanitarian Day is all about Celebrating People Helping People.
