  • (1888PressRelease) July 14, 2010 - San Francisco, CA - Mary Hughes and Debbie Walsh are Thursday night's guests on WomenCount Radio, featured on Blog Talk Radio at 7:30 p.m. PST/10:30 p.m. EST.

Since 2008 the number of women in office has declined. The number of women currently holding office in the United States are dismal. Only 24 percent of state legislators nationwide are women and only 17 percent of the US Congress is female. Internationally, the US ranks anywhere from 61st to 73rd in terms of women's representation. The 2012 Project is a unique opportunity to change those numbers.

Mary Hughes has directed campaigns and advised elected officials in contests resulting in a number of groundbreaking "firsts:" including the first woman in US history to lead her Party in the Congress Speaker Nancy Pelosi. Debbie Walsh has spent almost the last 30 years as one of the leading authorities on topics related to women's political participation as the Director for the Center for American Women and Politics (CAWP). They have come together to take advantage of a rare opportunity to increase the number of women in politics with The 2012 Project.

WomenCount began airing on Blog Talk Radio in June of 2009 as a way to not only showcase women in office but as a way to help inspire and encourage other women to run for office as well. Previous guests have included Ohio's Secretary of State and former Senate Candidate Jennifer Brunner, Congresswomen Judy Chu and Linda Sanchez, Candidate for California Attorney General Kamala Harris, Marie Wilson of the Whitehouse Project and 2010 Gubernatorial candidates Kim McMillan and Margaret Kelliher as well as California SoS Debra Bowen.

"WomenCount Radio has been a huge success. It's yet another way that WomenCount is leveraging new media to reach out to women all around the country and engage them on issues related to women in politics. Each week we focus on top issues that were covered in our blog as well as interview guests who are really making a difference for women in politics. The shows have been inspiring and entertaining, and as a result our movement continues to grow," said Stacy Mason, Executive Director of WomenCount.
