  • San Francisco, CA (1888PressRelease) January 24, 2020 - Winston Preparatory School (WPS) is thrilled to announce that they will be opening a sixth campus in Marin County, California in August 2020. Winston Prep is excited to bring the essence and mission of the school—the expertise and methods that have been successfully applied to reach eight times the number of lives it did just two decades ago—to the West Coast.

The campus will be located at 1 Saint Vincents Drive, San Rafael, CA and will be under the direction of Kristen Atkins. Kristen has worked with students with learning challenges for the past three decades, in the capacity of teaching, program development, curriculum development, leadership and teacher training. She has worked at The Landmark School, The Janus School, Chartwell School and California State University at Monterey Bay. She began her teaching career working with students with learning differences in the Watermark Program at Landmark School, where she took teenagers with dyslexia on a tall ship sailing expedition across the Atlantic Ocean and through the Mediterranean for an academic year.

Winston Prep is currently accepting applications for students in the larger Bay Area through grade 12 for the Marin, California campus for the 2020-2021 school year. Open House dates can be found on their website at https://www.winstonprep.edu/apply-now/sf/.

WPS’ mission is to facilitate the independence and meaningful participation of students with specific learning disorders. This means that the leaders and faculty at WPS are working within a model that requires educators and students to assess, understand, and design curriculum based on individualized understanding, and to continually re-evaluate the program. This model focuses not only on skill development, but also on the development of characteristics that lead to independence such as resilience, self-advocacy, and self-regulation.

As the school states: The science behind WPS is how we understand and help students with learning problems. We are experts in learning and cognition and we are compelled to be active leaders in bridging the gap between research and practice. At WPS, we research so that we can understand, we understand so that we can individualize each child’s school experience, and we do so in a way that makes this school all about them. As we understand them as individuals, they begin to feel understood—and this is where the Winston Prep magic begins.

Under the leadership of Executive Director, Scott Bezsylko, Winston Preparatory School has five additional campuses, including two in New York City, one in Whippany, New Jersey, one in Norwalk, Connecticut, and one in Dix Hills, Long Island, New York.
