  • Philadelphia, PA-NJ (1888PressRelease) May 27, 2011 - West German BMW in Philadelphia is proud to confirm that BMW was once again successful at the International Engine of the Year Awards. This year, BMW won four class victories and strengthened its role as the most successful manufacturer in the competition. BMW won awards for four of its six and eight-cylinder petrol and diesel engines. The winning engines are currently in several of BMW's current models.

The awards were decided by an international jury, including 65 car journalists, all from 32 different countries across the world. The categories for the awards included a capacity class from 1.4 to 1.8 liters, 1.8 to 2 liters, 2.5 to 3 liters, and 3-4 liters.

The winner for the 1.4 to 1.8 liter capacity class was the engine featured in the new MINI Cooper S. The engine is a 1.6-liter four-cylinder that is equipped with a Twin Scroll turbocharger, direct petrol injection, and variable valve control based off of the BMW-patented VALVETRONIC system. This gives the 135 kW/184 bhp engine the title of the world's most efficient power unit of its type and size.

The winner in the capacity class of 1.8 to 2 liters was the four-cylinder diesel engine with Power Turbo technology. It is a 2 liter power unit that is in the BMW 123d and the BMW X1 xDrive23d. This 150 kW/201 bhp engine sets the mark for its class with exceptionally low fuel consumption and emission levels.

The victory for the 2.5 to 3 liter capacity class went to the 3 liter 225 kW/306 bhp straight six-cylinder engine with BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. This engine was featured in the new BMW 5 Series and the new BMW X3 also.

The winning engine for the capacity class of 3-4 liters went to the four time winner V8 power unit that is featured in the BMW M3. It is a 4 liter engine with 309 kW/420 bhp. It was the only naturally aspirated engine among the four award-winners. The engine convinced the jury with its exceptional pulling power created by the high-revving concept used on this engine.

BMW once again showed its dominance and dedication to producing high quality engines with its success in four of the eight awards categories. BMW has given its engines exceptional power and at the same time, efficiency. Since 1999, BMW has won more than 50 class awards in the Engine of the Year Award competition. This persistence and success demonstrates BMW's expertise in developing engines.
