OAKLAND, Calif., Aug. 9, 2010 - At its 2010 Corporate Philanthropy Awards, the San Francisco Business Times honored Wendel, Rosen, Black & Dean LLP as the sole recipient of the Community Partnership in Sustainability Award. The award recognizes partnerships between a company and community nonprofits - with the company demonstrating an investment of resources and leadership in nonprofit programs that contribute to improving the quality of our environment, including waste reduction, energy conservation and/or other sustainable policies and practices.

With a solid historical background in all things real estate and a forward-thinking approach to advancing the industry, Wendel Rosen, a certified green business and a longtime advocate of sustainable business practices, is a leader in the green building movement. Firm attorneys helped found California's most influential green building organizations - Build It Green (BIG) and the U.S. Green Building Council - Northern California Chapter (USGBC-NCC) - both of which are the authorities for green building in the residential and commercial sectors, respectively.

At the forefront of these efforts is Partner Donald Simon. A true champion of environmental sustainability, he is founder, director and long-time president of BIG, as well as a co-founder and founding director of USGBC-NCC. The firm has served as pro bono general counsel to both organizations since their inception, as well as actively participates in educational programs, provides legal services and policy advocacy assistance, and hosts events and training seminars for these organizations. It is this unmatched commitment to green building that earned Wendel Rosen the Community Partnership in Sustainability Award.

"Wendel Rosen's and Donald Simon's investment in and commitment to BIG is invaluable. The firm is miles ahead of any other firm when it comes to sustainable business advocacy and leading by example," said David Myers, manager of development and communications for BIG. As told to the San Francisco Business Times, "Without the help of Donald and the firm, green building wouldn't be as far advanced in California."

"This award makes me very proud," said Simon. "Wendel Rosen is an amazing firm that has done a tremendous job melding and playing an active role in two of the most important corporate social responsibilities of today - community philanthropy and environmental advocacy. With a united front, we will continue working with these organizations and pushing for green building education and action, as well as policy change, so our communities become more sustainable."

Wendel Rosen is the pioneering law firm when it comes to adopting and promoting sustainable business practices in the legal profession. In 2003, it became the first certified green law firm in the country (certification conducted by the Bay Area Green Business Program) and launched its Green Business Practice Group. The firm is also affiliated with other organizations that promote environmental and sustainable business awareness and change, such as 1% For the Planet, and it was recently certified as a B Corporation by B Lab, an organization dedicated to creating a new sector of the economy that harnesses the power of business to solve social and environmental problems.

In addition to BIG and USGBC, Wendel Rosen attorneys are immersed in other influential Bay Area non-profits that further the mission of promoting sustainability, taking on roles as founders, directors, counsel, contributors and leaders. Many of the firm's executives and attorneys speak to business audiences regarding pursuit of a sustainable business operation. The firm is also committed to building strong local communities and nurturing businesses emerging in disadvantaged neighborhoods, such as Rebuilding Together Oakland, East Bay Economic Development Alliance and Inner City Advisors.
