  • (1888PressRelease) November 04, 2013 - WeCutFoam, custom foam cutting company in Sunnyvale, CA has announced that they have collaborated with the Exploratorium Museum to create "Whispering Dishes" exhibit, San Francisco's first Living Innovation Zone, also known as LIZ.

This exhibit, called "Whispering Dishes" is one of ten new Living Innovation Zones Exhibits that are planned to be placed on the sidewalks of San Francisco, to serve as new dynamic and interactive public spaces. Those exhibits will connect visitors, innovators and the City of San Francisco to facilitate visitor's exploration and hands on science and technology, while revitalizing the city. This first LIZ exhibit was placed on Market Street, next to Yerba Buena, with Mayor Edwin Lee launching it on Tuesday, October 29, 2013, and is the first in the nation.

WeCutFoam machined the "Whispering Dishes" design with its CNC router, using high density Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) foam. The exhibit project was made in five layers, each being 7" thick, then machined both at top and bottom. To finalize the foam cutting stage, all layers were glued to one another to create the full display.

The foam was then sent to Concrete Concepts & Design, a company in Richmond owned by Mr. Heriberto Esquivel. Heriberto and his staff sprayed concrete on top of the foam, and once hardened and dried the exhibit design was ready to be displayed. The end product is two 8 foot tall dishes facing each other, being 50 feet apart, with standing geometric layers between them. The structure is made so that people standing on each side of the dishes, whispering will be able to hear each other, even with the heavy street noise.

Tal, WeCutFoam Co-Owner said "I was truly excited and thrilled to be a part of something so innovative. This was one of the more fun projects we have had the pleasure of creating. It was great to collaborate with the Jesse Marsh from the Exploratorium and with Heriberto to see how it all put together and comes to Life"

Tal continued to say that "We have vast experience with creating displays and exhibits. This is our passion. We just love making props, signs and displays, and even if it's not the easiest projects, it's for sure rewarding" The company has made other exhibits for the Exploratorium in the past, as well as background displays for Petersen Automotive Museum, exhibit parts for San Jose Repertory Theater, window displays for Macy's and many more…
