  • (1888PressRelease) May 16, 2015 - Utility Systems Solutions President and CEO David Shutler traveled to Washington, D.C. last week to attend the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) awards ceremony celebrating the 2015 National Small Business Person of the Year.

The 2015 National Small Business Person of the Year awards recognized winners from the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The Texas winner was David Shutler, president and CEO of Dallas-based Utility Systems Solutions, Inc. (US2), an energy savings company with more than $10 million in annual revenue.

"It's an honor to represent Dallas and the state of Texas on a national level. I've been working with the Small Business Administration for several years, and I appreciate the organization's opportunities for leadership, networking, and assistance in securing federal contracts. It's incredible to start something from scratch and see it grow to a multi-million dollar business, and I'm humbled to be recognized by the Small Business Administration," said Shutler.

Shutler is the first Dallas businessman to win the SBA award. Even more impressive, Shutler captured the DFW District award, the Texas State award and represented Texas at the SBA's ceremony and White House reception in Washington, D.C. on May 8 as part of National Small Business Week. The week is an annual celebration that recognizes the critical contributions of America's entrepreneurs and small business owners since 1963.

Shutler, a retired Air Force Colonel, founded US2 in 2005 to reduce energy consumption through innovative, intelligent utility solutions. Shutler's military experience and years working in the energy industry allowed him to insightfully improve government energy systems through turnkey energy saving projects in steam and electric utilities.

US2 has completed more than 180 contracts for federal clients, including the Air Force and Veterans Administration. The business specializes in retrofitting aging and inefficient infrastructure with modern, cost effective systems that save energy and improve budgets.

US2 is a federally certified Small Disadvantaged Business (8(a)/SDB), Service-Disabled Veteran Owned Small Business (SDVOSB), and Energy Saving Company (ESCO). The company's sales jumped from $3.9 million in 2011 to $8.9 million in 2012 and then $13.2 million in 2013. In the last 10 years, the business grew from two to 25 employees who work at its LEED Gold certified Dallas headquarters.

According to the SBA, there are more than 27 million small businesses in the U.S. with a new business being started every minute.

"I'm proud to have created a company that not only provides meaningful employment, but has saved federal agencies more than $27 million over the last 10 years. Creating a successful business is a wonderful achievement, but it's even more meaningful when you know you've helped key agencies save money and resources. It's fun to see your efforts make the world a little better," said Shutler.
