  • (1888PressRelease) December 14, 2016 - On the recent announcement by footballers regarding sexual abuse in football and the subsequent police enquiries.

UNSPOKEN VOICES welcomes the police investigations into allegations of the sexual abuse of children by football coaches. There should be no time limit on abuse investigations, and no stone should be left unturned in bringing those responsible to justice, ensuring that there is now a safe environment for children to develop their footballing skills, and supporting the victims of abuse to find some form of closure.
Sexual abuse is an insidious crime: it leeches into so many aspects of a victim's life and its impact often endures throughout a victim's life. Speaking about childhood sexual abuse is often immensely difficult, as has been shown by the clearly emotional response by those footballers who have chosen to speak openly about their experiences.

Speaking today, UNSPOKEN VOICES founder TRENT ROBERTS (not his real name) said:
"We welcome the recent press coverage and applaud the bravery, honesty and leadership of those footballers who have chosen to go public. Many footballers have communicated their experiences to the police and chosen not to be public about this. Both groups - those who have chosen to use their experience to encourage others, and those who have not - are heroes, and there should be no stigma attached to choosing either to speak to the press or not: the process of healing is unique to each victim, and all victims should be given the space to find their own path."

"There has long been a belief that sport might be affected by the sexual abuse of children on a far wider scale than had originally been believed. The seriousness with which the police are investigating the allegations seems to confirm this. I look forward to prosecutions."

    BACKGROUND
UNSPOKEN VOICES exists to provide a voice to those who feel that they have not voice, whether they choose to identify themselves or not. Anonymous letters addressing abusers (also anonymous) provide one of the recognised methods for assisting in the healing process and supporting the victim in their search for completion.

The UNSPOKEN VOICES mission statement is "Support. Encourage. Heal. Inspire"

UNSPOKEN VOICES is a community of survivors of childhood sexual abuse. We seek to communicate the damage that has been done by abusers by writing anonymous letters explaining the long-term effects and damage that has been done by abuse, almost always well into adulthood and impacting on so many aspects of our lives.

TRENT ROBERTS is the community's founder. His own letter to his abusers is at http://unspokenvoices.co.uk/stories/you-stole-from-me/
Please note that given the sensitive nature of the subject, live interviews are problematic, although we welcome press interest. Please ensure that you read the media guidelines at http://unspokenvoices.co.uk/media/.
