  • (1888PressRelease) November 21, 2020 - The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has amended the flammability performance testing standard for mattresses and mattress pads in response to a change in ignition source cigarette.

At the beginning of October 2020, the CPSC voted 4-0 to approve the publication of a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (NPR) that amends the Federal Standard for the Flammability of Mattresses and Mattress Pads (16 CFR Part 1632). This change was required because the original standard required the use of the Standard Reference Material (SRM) cigarette SRM 1196. However, the sole supplier of ignition source cigarette SRM 1196, National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST), had completely depleted its stock and was now unable to procure further supplies.

The approved change allows the use of a replacement to SRM 1196, the new ignition source cigarette SRM 1196a. Exhaustive studies have shown that SRM 1196a is statistically equivalent to SRM 1196 and according to CPSC staffers, “SRM 1196a is a comparable, safety neutral replacement for SRM 1196.”
