  • (1888PressRelease) April 14, 2023 - Gift of Life Marrow Registry is excited to announce its annual Celebrity Golf Tournament will be held Monday April 17, 2023 at Boca West Country Club in Boca Raton, Fla. The event is hosted by Miami Dolphins legend and Ring of Honor member Mark Duper.

Other celebrities scheduled to attend include Pro Football Hall of Famer Dwight Stephenson, Miami Dolphins great Nat Moore and other retired NFL players and NHL players. Registration opens at 11:00 a.m. with luncheon at 11:30 and shotgun start at 1:00 p.m.

A highlight of the event will be two emotional introductions of lifesaving marrow and blood stem cell donors to their recipients. The first will be a 77-year-old resident of Port St. Lucie, Fla. and transplant recipient who will meet his donor, a 29-year-old male who donated blood stem cells. The second will be a 9-year-boy and transplant recipient who will meet his donor, a 24-year-old woman who donated bone marrow. Neither of the pairs have ever met as transplants are anonymous for the first year under Federal regulations. The introductions will be held at 11:45am and 5:15 p.m., respectively.

The event will benefit Gift of Life Marrow Registry, a nonprofit registry for blood stem cell and marrow donors facilitating matches between donors and patients. Stem cell and marrow transplants have the potential to cure leukemia, lymphoma, sickle cell, inherited immune disorders, and 70 other life-threatening conditions.

Today, 90% of donations use blood stem cells, collected from the arm in a process similar to donating blood platelets. Only 10% of transplants use bone marrow, which is collected from the hip bone and is a short outpatient procedure, usually requested for pediatric patients.
