  • (1888PressRelease) July 22, 2016 - The 2015 EU RAPEX Annual Report indicates that the most notified type of risk was chemical, with a quarter of all notifications. This was followed by injury, with 22% of the total notifications. The increase in notifications concerning chemical risk reflects the focus market surveillance authorities are placing on dangerous and unauthorized chemicals in consumer products.

Toys represented the largest group of products reported to RAPEX, with 27% of all notifications. Toys also represented 37% of all notifications relating to chemical risks, particularly toys containing phthalates. This can be taken as a reflection of the high safety requirements relating to children's products.

It is interesting to note that Jewelry, while only accounting for six percent of the total number of notifications, represented 20%, and the second highest sector, of all chemical notifications.

RAPEX was created in 2004 and is the European Commission's Rapid Alert System for dangerous non-food products. A network of 31 countries, including all 28 EU members, and representing 512 million consumers, RAPEX enables the quick exchange of information concerning dangerous non-food products posing a risk to health and safety of consumers.

RAPEX is one of a number of authorities protecting consumers from the possible health risks posed by faulty goods. SGS has the expertise and experience to help manufacturers remain compliant with regulations in all global markets. Working with SGS allows companies to protect their brands and avoid costly and embarrassing product recalls.
