  • Philadelphia, PA-NJ (1888PressRelease) May 01, 2012 - During this exciting event, the children of the Quaker School at Horsham became the teachers for a day, leading demonstrations and simulations to educate their parents, grandparents and other visitors. Guests learned how this very different school provides the support necessary to gently guide the students to learn to live with their differences, and to thrive as distinct individuals, with passionate interests and well developed skills.

In a science fair style setting, each homeroom set up a "lab" to demonstrate different learning exceptionalities, resources, and accommodations. Classes included topics in demystification, dyslexia, learning styles, sensory needs and sensory breaks and assistive technology. Special programs such as "First in Math" and "Lexia" were also conducted. The students demonstrated strategies they use to improve their academic skills, such as how to determine the main idea in a passage and to discern supporting ideas, how to understand and remember math rules and facts, and how to self-regulate and re-focus.

As teachers for the day, the students utilized the array of assistive technology available to everyone in the school, demonstrating their facility on Smartboards, iPads, numerous software programs, and of course, their highly versatile Mac laptops.
