The Fortnight That was UTM Makes Waves at AIMA Quiz

  • (1888PressRelease) March 13, 2013 - University of Technology and Management, Shillong the youngest Institution in the North East made waves at the AIMA Annual National Quiz at Guwahati with Faculty member Deepak Shukla and three other students holding the spotlight in the audience round. UTM Group though missed making it to the final round by a whisker but made up in the audience round.

    One of the newest faculties Deepak Shukla held the centre stage by picking up three special prizes with Yashraj Godwill Shaw, Anoop Tiwari and Digvijay Singh, all students of CCVT, chipping in with one special prize each. So much so that the quiz master at Royal Group Hall had to politely convey that UTM students and the lone faculty were not allowed to take more questions adding: "We need to give chance to others, too."

    Team UTM was prepared by its Asst. Dean (Management) Mr Rishan Rynjah, Communication faculty Dr Bernadette Lyngdoh. Associate Director, Campus Affairs Sajal Sen was responsible for making arrangements for the seven two-member teams. The event was also covered by, News Live, Guwahati-based channel wherein our student Yashraj Godwill Shaw gave an interview.

    TEDx Live:
    A five member student team also participated on their own initiative in TEDx StraightLive, a night long interactive event directly beamed from the US at Guwahati on Feb 27. Those who participated were all praise for the conduct of such an extravaganza where in large number of students from the entire region took part.

    DYNAMIC PARADIGM ON CLOUD COMPUTING:
    A Webinar was hosted by UTM under the aegis of IBM on the Feb. 28, 2013 wherein all the B.Tech (CSE) in Cloud Computing and Virtualization Technology (CCVT) students took part. The programme was facilitated by faculty members, Bharti Paleti and Deepak Shukla. Two more Webinars are planned for March and April by IBM, strategic partners of UTM.

    NIT FEST:
    UTM students caught the eye at the National Institute of Technology show with an exciting horror drama 'Zombies'. Participating students were lustily cheered at Panache-2013, the annual fest of NIT at Bijni complex. UTM also made it presence felt through an all-girl dance sequence besides catching the eyeballs in the ramp walk. Participating was possible courtesy the efforts of Associate Director, Campus Affairs Sajal Sen.

    VISIT OF TOP JOURNALISTS TO UTM:
    Four leading journalists led by India's top photo journalist, S.N. Sinha, former Photo Editor of Hindustan Times gave a talk to the students UTM on Feb 5. Mr Sinha, President of the Indian Journalist Union had come to Shillong, with other colleagues drawn from different parts of the country, to cover the swearing-in ceremony of the Meghalaya Chief Minister, Dr Mukul Sangma. Mr Sinha exhorted the students to click pictures using their brains rather than pressing the click button. "You need to be a thinking photographer," he quipped adding, "Photography is a paying profession, apart from being a great hobby that has been simplified by latest technology.

    Mr K. Srinivas Reddy, Editor, Vishal Andhra from Hyderabad said "Democracy was a three-legged cow and would crumble unless it is supported by a strong corruption-free Press and Media." A doyen of a journalist, Mr Reddy, decried the falling standards of journalism.

    Others to speak on the occasion were senior journalist from Assam Tribune B.B. Lahkar and former Bureau Head of New Indian Express, Vijaywada edition A. Anjanalu. The scribes had come on the invitation UTM Pro-Vice Chancellor Avinash Singh.

    ONGOING EVENTS:
    UTM BADMINTON COMPETITIONS - Preliminary matches of boys and girls UTM Badminton Tournament are being held currently. The finals will be played on Feb. 9 when the President of UTM, Dr Parag Diwan comes calling. Preliminary matches are being looked after by faculty members Deepak Shukla and Mac Oliver Rynjah. Faculty competitions are also planned.

    UPCOMING EVENTS:
    INDUSTRIAL/STUDY TOUR - A study tour for the students of BTech ECE has been planned by faculty member, Fairiky Rynjah to the 22 MW Power House at Umiam.
