  • New York, NY (1888PressRelease) April 27, 2011 - Bernice Malone, who recently launched the Brooklyn Prom & Scholarship Project (www.facebook.com/brooklynpromproject), announced today that the organization will be hosting its second annual "Prom Dress Give Away" which will take place on Saturday, May 14th in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn.

"Each year, there are high school students with dreams of attending one of the biggest social events of their teen years - their high school prom," said Brooklyn Prom & Scholarship founder, Bernice Malone. "Unfortunately, many are unable to attend due to the high cost and expenses associated with this special event."

Each year, parents of boys and girls alike begin the exhausting process of preparing for the prom with searches for the prefect pair of shoes to match the perfect dress or that dapper tuxedo. With many families today making sacrifices because of a very slow to recover economy, many teens will miss out on this special event because of the financial costs. In an effort to help, Bernice Malone launched the Brooklyn Prom & Scholarship last year.

Last year's event drew dozen of girls from around the borough, proving to be a very successful endeavor. This year, Malone hopes to surpass those amazing results. This year, Malone's organization is expanding their reach to include boys in Brooklyn by teaming with grassroots men's organization, We Make Us Better. With We Make Us Better, Brooklyn Prom Project will be renting tuxedos for all 30 of the graduating young men of Bedford Academy High School.

But The Brooklyn Prom & Scholarship Project can only make this possible with the help from the community. The organization has teamed with local sponsors including House of Art, De Lux Hair Gallery, Tin City, Little Red Boutique, Mothers Empowered, My Salon Scoop and Chloe's Beauty Supply.

But there is still so much more that can be done. In order to accomplish their goal, the organization is seeking donations of

    • Cocktail, Social Occasion and Bridesmaid Dresses
    • Social Occasion Shoes, Jewelry & Accessories
    • Un-opened Cosmetics and Beauty Products
    • Tuxedo and Suits: Donations, Rentals or Gift Certificates
    • Ties (Bow & Traditional) and Men's accessories
    • Financial contributions are also welcome

All donations will be accepted through May 14th.

In addition to the clothing drive, the Brooklyn Prom & Scholarship Project will be hosting a variety of fundraising events throughout the borough including a Pre¬-Mother's Day Tea on May 1st and an Adults Only Prom on May 6th. The proceeds from these events will be used to create scholarship awards for incoming freshman to offset the cost of their textbooks.

With the help of volunteers, all items will be distributed to local students free of charge. Attendees to the one day event will also get to experience mini workshops on etiquette, skin care, and make-up application along with the opportunity to win great prizes. There will be special guest appearances by Brooklyn's own Miss New York Teen USA, Lisa Drouillard and Miss Brooklyn's Outstanding Teen, Brittney Hollingsworth.
