  • (1888PressRelease) August 17, 2017 - Irving, TX – Founder of the renowned Prostate Seed Institute talks a new breakthrough in imaging technology.

Researchers may have found a way to make detecting and pinpointing the location of recurrent prostate cancer easier. A breakthrough tracer that is designed to combine with positron emission tomography is providing clinicians with more accurate confirmation of recurrence.

The tracer under development has been shown in clinical trials to have an overall detection rate of 68 percent. In a recent study, the test held up very well in finding recurrences within the pelvic region and was also effective at finding metastases in locations outside the pelvis.

“With an estimated third of men who are treated for prostate cancer likely to witness recurrences, steps forward in testing are important for helping improve patient outcomes,” says Dr. Gregory Echt, founder and lead surgeon at the Prostate Seed Institute. “Accurate, early diagnosis is key to successful intervention with recurrences.”

While the new tracer, known as Axumin, remains under study, it’s progress so far is encouraging, says Echt. The test has been shown useful not only for confirming or denying recurrence suspicions, but also for helping pinpoint recurrence locations. It was also known in clinical trials to be well-tolerated by patients. How soon it might be made readily available remains unclear.

“Recurrences are a real concern for men and their doctors alike following prostate cancer treatment,” Echt says. “The potential for this outcome makes the importance of routine follow ups through prostate-specific antigen testing and other screens clear. Men should follow through with their doctors to undergo routine screening and take additional diagnostic action if PSA levels rise post treatment.”

Men who are diagnosed with prostate cancer should work closely with their healthcare providers to determine the best treatment in their unique cases. Should intervention be recommended, routine follow-ups are strongly advised to safeguard against possible recurrences.
