Learning some basketball drills for kids is a great way to help start teaching your children with basketball fundamentals. Teaching your kids how to play basketball early can give them an advantage when compared to the other children, especially as they show great potential early on. If done correctly and with effort, then your child may even earn basketball scholarships.

Basketball is a great sport your kids can grow up to. It's a healthy way for them to express their competitiveness, which is common while growing. It is also one of the best ways to develop their values and discipline, which is an asset later in life. That's why learning some basketball drills for kids and teaching basketball fundamentals is a great way to brighten up their future.

Some of the key basketball fundamentals are dribbling and ball handling. So, as a parent, be careful not to focus on shooting without covering the basics first. Sure, you can go ahead and enrol them in a basketball training camp, but that would only take away the fun and bond you and your children can develop while practicing.

To help you out, here are some easy basketball drills for kids you can learn and work on with your child to develop great basketball fundamentals.

    1.) Double Dribbles

This is a great drill to help your kids learn how to dribble. When unsupervised, children may tend to dribble using only one hand. If this is developed, it may become a bad habit to break. Dribbling with only one hand impairs the full potential in dribbling. That's why we need to teach children how to dribble with both hands.

Have your children hold two balls, one for each of their hands. Then, let them dribble the ball at the same time, using one hand for each ball. Have them do this for 5 straight minutes. If they drop the ball or lose control, then they have to reset their times and try again. Make it fun by having them compete. The first one to reach 5 minutes wins! Have a minor prize ready for the winner too.

    2.) Red Light, Green Light

This is another of the basketball drills for kids you can use as a game. It develops their dribbling skills while moving and enhances control. It also helps them develop dribbling without looking at the ball but at the court.

This drill is done by having all your kids stand at one end of the court and you at the other end. Each of them must have a ball. When you shout, "green light!", they should all dribble their balls and move toward you. Make sure to tell them to keep their eyes on you and not on the ball. If a player loses control of their ball or looks down to dribble, then they have to go back to the starting line.

When you shout, "red light", then they should all stop dribbling and moving. Shout "green light!" again to have them moving toward you. The first player to reach you wins. Have a prize ready too!
