  • (1888PressRelease) February 12, 2014 - Susan Cheng, Associate Physician and Instructor in Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital will give a presentation on "Metabolomics in Cohort Studies: A Case Study of Longevity in Humans" at the Inaugural Metabolomics Conference - Advances & Applications in Human Disease to be held in Cambridge, MA on May 22-23, 2014 by GTC.

Dr. Cheng will discuss recent technical advances that have allowed for the application of metabolomic profiling in population-based studies. The ability to conduct high-throughput profiling in large clinical cohorts presents unique opportunities and challenges. In this case study, she will present the example of an effort to identify metabolomic markers associated with healthy aging and longevity phenotypes in a large cohort of men and women who have been living in the community and followed longitudinally over several decades.

Dr. Susan Cheng is an Associate Physician in Cardiovascular Medicine at Brigham and Women's Hospital and Instructor in Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Cheng serves as Co-Director of the Echocardiography Laboratory at the Framingham Heart Study and Associate Director of the Cardiac Imaging Core Laboratory at the Brigham and Women's Hospital. Dr. Cheng graduated magna cum laude from Harvard College and received her medical degree from the Michael G. DeGroote School of Medicine at McMaster University and a master's degree in public health from the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Cheng completed internship and residency in internal medicine at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and her cardiovascular training at the Brigham and Women's Hospital.

Dr. Cheng's research is focused on the use of imaging and non-imaging biomarkers to study cardiovascular aging. Her most recent work includes using metabolomic profiling to study metabolic disease, energy expenditure, and longevity phenotypes in community-based cohorts. Dr. Cheng has authored over 70 publications, and her work has been recognized by multiple awards including the Calderwood Prize and the American Heart Association Samuel A. Levine Young Clinical Investigator Award.

GTC's Metabolomics Conference program will discuss metabolite identification, standardization and validation, computational approaches to assessing the metabolome, advances in metabolite markers for personalized medicine, technological advances, clinical assay development and much more!

This conference is also part of the 2014 Drug Discovery Summit, which consists of this conference and three other conferences:
    1) Bioanalyitcal Sensors
    2) GPCR Structure, Function and Drug Discovery
    3) Single Cell Analysis
