  • San Diego, CA (1888PressRelease) April 12, 2012 - As the country prepares to celebrate National Volunteer Week, April 15-21, and honor the countless individuals who generously give of their time and talents, Senior Resource Group (SRG), LLC, a leader in providing distinctive retirement living, is also honoring the commitment and dedication of its communities' volunteers.

Resident volunteers at SRG senior living communities not only play vital roles within their communities but throughout the local area as well. Many are involved with neighboring schools, hospitals, charities and nonprofit organizations.

These volunteers are among the approximately 9.2 million adults, aged 65+, who dedicate 1.7 billion hours of service to communities across the country.

"Our residents have a wealth of experience and talents and seek out opportunities to be actively engaged in the community at large," said SRG Chief Operating Officer Kayda Johnson.

A 2002 study conducted for Civic Ventures, a nonprofit which researches and publishes reports on older adults' attitudes, supports SRG's findings. Fifty-nine percent of respondents saw retirement as a "time to be active and involved, to start new activities and set new goals".

With the care-free lifestyle provided by SRG senior living communities, residents can now volunteer as they please without having to worry about day-to-day responsibilities.

"I enjoy my life here at The Park Lane," said Sal Riso, a resident at SRG's Monterey, Calif., community who dedicates his Tuesdays to visiting people in the hospital and in hospice care. "It's nice not having to cook or buy food. This gives me more time to do the things that bring me the greatest satisfaction."

At sister community, SpringRidge at Charbonneau in Portland, Ore., resident Paul Bowen can attest to the new found time he now has to making wooden toys for Toys for Tots. Throughout the year, he creates turtle-shaped step stools-perfectly scaled for use by young children-in the community's wood shop to ensure each child receives a special gift for the holidays.

In addition to residents volunteering individually, SRG senior living communities provide ideal environments for neighbors to support great causes as a group. Residents enjoy the camaraderie and socialization derived from partnering with others who share their philanthropic attitude.

At La Vida Real and Maravilla communities, located in Rancho San Diego and in Santa Barbara, Calif., respectively, residents have teamed up to help firefighters console children caught in emergency situations. The group has donated more than 100 stuffed teddy bears and kittens with hand-knitted scarves and hats to their local fire stations. They are committed to continuing the project to ensure firefighters are never in short supply.

Residents at SRG's NorthRidge, Calif. community, The Village at NorthRidge, also find tremendous satisfaction working together to help others. The Warm Wishes & Art group recently partnered with the Police Athletic League, donating knitted hats, mittens and scarves for homeless children and adults. Since last October, they have created 43 scarves, 27 pairs of mittens and 11 mitten/hat sets for teens and adults and 35 mittens, 68 scarves and 54 hats for children.

For seniors who volunteer, there are several documented health benefits to be reaped including improvements in mental health and physical functioning; delayed onset of age-related health problems; increased self-esteem; and heightened connectivity with other people.

"Residents at SRG communities truly embody the spirit of volunteerism," said Johnson. "We're proud of their service and unwavering commitment to making the communities we serve better."
