  • Chicago, IL (1888PressRelease) April 24, 2011 - This summer, children can explore the world of music, dance and visual arts with an array of interactive classes specially created for boys and girls ages Pre-K through 5th grade. Held at Chicago's newly renovated Southport Performing Arts Conservatory (SPACE), 3433 W. Peterson Ave., the 2011 summer arts camp offers four week-long summer sessions held Monday through Friday, with half-day sessions conveniently scheduled for either mornings or afternoons. Children can sign up for one or all four sessions. Registration for SPACE's 2011 Summer Arts program is $200 per child per week-long session.     Specially created to entertain, educate and empower children, SPACE's Summer Arts Camp classes are held Monday through Friday. Morning sessions are held each weekday from 9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Afternoon sessions are held from 12:30 p.m. 4 p.m. Students receive instruction in all classes based on half-day registration. Each Summer Camp session is one week in length and scheduled for the following dates:
    · Session 1: June 20 - 24, 2011
    · Session 2: June 27 - July 1, 2011
    · Session 3: July 18 - 22, 2011
    · Session 4: July 25 - 28, 2011

    All classes are non-competitive and nurturing, cater to boys and girls ages Pre-K through grade 5, and are supervised by highly-trained SPACE staff members that include professional arts teachers and artists.

    Dance Program

    The Storybook of a Little Princess and Prince (Pre-Ballet) /Grades Pre-K
    Dressing in costumes and playing make believe. What could be more fun? Professional teachers provide quality instruction in the fundamentals of ballet and tumbling. Set in a
    fun and nurturing environment, children gain self-esteem while working on coordination skills, strength, rhythm, creativity and body awareness.

    Ballet/Grades 1-5 (Girls & Boys)
    This classic form of dance builds grace, beauty, poise and strength. Ballet develops correct body placement, enriches mental and physical dexterity and enhances a sense of artistry in children.

    Musical Theater. Basic Jazz and Tap / Grades Pre-K - 5
    This class combines basic jazz and tap steps from Broadway musicals into performing precision numbers, kick lines and dance using props. Students are taught choreography and are guided through the process in order to choreograph and record their own movements and ideas.

    Jamming and Breaking - Hip Hop and Break Dance / Grades Pre-K - 5 (Boys & Girls)
    This popular dance style is jam-packed, full of energy and fun and is similar to dance seen in music videos. SPACE instructors carefully choose music for lyrics that are acceptable to the students and keep moves age appropriate.

    Music Program

    Sing & Play for Boys and Girls / Grades Pre-K-5
    The class builds a foundation for basic music experience and includes instruction in simple theory with an emphasis on feeling beats, learning basic rhythms, singing, finger and clapping games, as well as improvisation and class performing. Full of fun activities, this class is designed to appeal and entertain a wide range of ages.

    Choir - Basic Vocal & Music Skills / Grades Pre-K - 5
    Students develop basic music and vocal skills by learning classic and popular songs culminating in a live performance. This is a wonderful opportunity to explore the joys of singing.

    Instrumental Group Instruction / Grades Pre-K - 5
    Piano-Guitar-Drum
    Students are introduced to the instrument of their choice and learn basic instrumental technique. This class provides an introduction to new material and continued musical development. A wonderful class to introduce budding musicians to an instrument and inspire future performers.
    Per Class Minimum: 6 Students required / *Guitar Students: 6 yrs. and up

    Visual Art
    Let's Paint the Music and Dance (Creative Arts) Grades Pre-K - 5 (Boys & Girls)
    This "art studio" is a wonderful environment for the active energy level of students. Children enter a creative and magical world where they create, design, explore and use their imaginations. Each week's class begins with a short music or dance story to introduce students to the class theme. Inspired by the story theme, students move to different areas of the studio and create drawing, painting and sculptural projects using a variety of materials.
    Material Fees: $20 per student.
