South Bay Rhinos Men's Rugby Club has won the Southern California Rugby Football Union Men's Club Division III title

  • Los Angeles-Long Beach, CA (1888PressRelease) May 09, 2012 - The South Bay Rhinos Men's Rugby Club has won the Southern California Rugby Football Union Men's Club Division III title. They have earned their place as the #1 seed going into the USA Rugby Men's Division III Club Playoffs held at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Ca. May 12-13, 2012.

    This is the second year in a row they have won this title. Past accomplishments include:

    • 2010 - placed 2nd in the Southern California Rugby Football Union Championship
    • 2011 - won the Southern California Rugby Football Union Championship
    • Played in the USA Rugby Men's Division III Club National Championships in Glendale, Co.
    • Placed 3rd in the Nation

    Lead by head coach, Barry Williams, former USA Men's National 7's player and supported by assistant coach Joe Katoa, the Rhinos have become a competitive powerhouse known for their imposing defense and their calculating offensive strategies. In the 2012 regular season the Rhinos played 10 games and posted almost 600 points against their opponents. The team consists of 25 players from all backgrounds and ethnicities and call Victoria Park in Carson, their home pitch.

    "I believe the guys deserve this. They have worked hard and sacrificed a great deal to be in this position" said Blair Samaseia, general manager and player. "It is an honor to represent the South Bay and Southern California. When the dust settles, my expectations are that we'll be #1 in the Nation".

    The game of rugby has been played in Southern California since the early 1900's. Rugby has recently seen a surge of interest with multiple clubs forming in the South Bay. The 2016 Summer Olympics, held in Rio de Janeiro will include rugby sevens.
