  • (1888PressRelease) June 15, 2011 - Held in the heart of the Massif Central mountain range, this year's trade show will feature 2,000 animals belonging to 64 breeds, which will be on display for 75,000 visitors from five continents.

Over the course of three days, Sommet de l'Élevage will host about 2,000 high-genetic-quality animals, which will be on display or competing. This will include 850 beef cattle (Hall 3), 450 dairy cattle (Hall 2), 400 sheep (Hall 5) and 300 workhorses and riding horses (Hall 4).

This year, the spotlight will be on French Limousin cattle, with over 450 animals entered into the national competition. On the dairy-cattle side, the Brown Swiss breed will feature in the major EUROBRUNE competition (for European breeds), which will include cows from Austria, France, Germany, Italy and Switzerland.

Extending across a 150,000 m² exhibition area, Sommet de l'Élevage will also provide its 75,000 visitors with a comprehensive offer aimed at all sectors of livestock farming such as farming machinery, facilities, supplies and livestock-farming services. The trade fair will also play host to the farming-sector job forum, as it did last year, which is organised by VETAGRO SUP (an agronomy and veterinarian school) and APECITA (the Association for Farming Managers' Employment).

Every year, Sommet de l'Élevage increases its international appeal: in 2011, 380 international exhibitors from 30 countries and 2,500 visitors from 60 countries are expected to attend the premier industry event in Clermont-Ferrand.

The International Business Club, headed by ADEPTA (the Association for the Development of International Trade in Farming Products and Techniques), will offer a VIP welcome to foreign delegations as well as guided tours of the trade fair, meetings with exhibitors, and a presentation of France's offer in terms of livestock farming and genetics.

As part of the Year of Mexico in France, a specific reception procedure will be put in place to receive delegations of Mexican livestock-farming managers.

It will also be possible for foreign visitors to take part in a host of events at the trade show. This will include close to 20 tours of livestock farms and food-industry technical facilities such as an insemination centre, a slaughterhouse and a meat-sector research centre.

Other events will include the Franco-African Business Meetings, an event in its third year, organised by the AFDI (the French Farmers and International Development Association), which will focus on the relationship between food self-sufficiency and family farming, in the presence of the Minister for Livestock Farming of Mali (in Western Africa).

The Franco-Maghreb Forum will take place over two days around the topic of France - a partner for Maghreb countries in the development of their beef-cattle sector. This new event aimed at promoting ties between France and North Africa is organised by FranceAgriMer, in partnership with France TERRE D'ELEVAGE.

A number of visits by politicians and various international symposiums will also take place over the three days of Sommet de l'Élevage. A range of topics will be featured during these conferences, including the latest advances in genomic research, the tenderness of meat, and the impact of the rising and volatile cost of raw materials on cattle birthing and fattening.

The Sommets d'Or competition will, as always, reward exhibitors whose equipment, products or services are the most innovative in the farming industry and the breeding sector.
