  • (1888PressRelease) June 26, 2019 - SGS, the leading provider of verification, inspection, testing and certification services, has become first company in Colombia to be accredited by ONAC, Colombia’s National Accreditation Body, to certify products in accordance with Resolution 0721-2018, the primary battery regulation.

Following a review by Colombia’s Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism and the Ministry of the Environment and Sustainable Development the country’s new primary battery regulation, Resolution 0721-2018, comes into force in July 2019, replacing Resolution 0172-2012.

The new Resolution sets out the minimum information requirements applicable to zinc-carbon and alkaline cell and battery labels and markings to establish the maximum permitted levels for the heavy metals in such products.

This accreditation from ONAC, a member of the International Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (ILAC), means SGS can provide testing services for batteries against this regulation in any ILAC laboratory, such as its affiliates in the USA, China, Europe or Brazil and issue product certification for the Colombian market.

Jhon Cediel, Technical Supervisor, SGS said: “As the country’s leading provider of verification, inspection, testing and certification services, we are proud to lead the way in becoming the first Certification Body in Colombia to gain this important accreditation. We look forward to working with organizations to help ensure the compliance of products against the new regulations and to support industry and business in reducing their impact on the natural environment.”

ONAC, a non-profit corporation constituted in 2007, works to accredit the technical competence of Conformity Assessment Bodies, to exercise as a monitoring authority in good laboratory practices of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) and to perform the functions of the National Accreditation Body.
