  • San Francisco, CA (1888PressRelease) August 09, 2013 - Scott Kahn, Chief Information Officer & Vice President Informatics of Illumina will give a presentation on "BaseSpace Cloud-Based Data Storage System" at the NGS & Bioinformatics Summit Europe on October 7-8, 2013 in Berlin, Germany.

As genome sequencing continues to drop in cost per base and more labs are generating data on the level of Genome Centers just a few years ago, there is a gap around data management practices that are scalable and that can be deployed with a limited investment in staff and infrastructure. These challenges are being addressed through cloud-based ecosystems such as BaseSpace in which data from the sequencers is securely transferred to appropriate infrastructure in which a rich set of analysis tools are provided as apps. Sharing of information is an important ability that BaseSpace provides without having to replicate or move the data. Finally, data backup and archiving can be provided without the need to have dedicated IT staff through the shared resource. Scott Kahn's talk will address how these types of data management capabilities have evolved, and how the move to a cloud-based infrastructure enables new ways of analysis that in turn enable completely new understandings to be discovered as the data modeling, data mining, and visualization tools evolve.

Dr. Scott D. Kahn Ph.D. has been Vice President and Chief Information Officer of Illumina Inc. since April 14, 2005. Dr. Kahn is responsible for all scientific software and information technologies of Illumina.

The NGS & Bioinformatics Summit Europe gathers the foremost experts to present on leading-edge technology in next-generation sequencing and bioinformatics. The summit includes two parallel conferences including joint sessions featuring discussions on both research and clinical applications of NGS with its respective challenges, and technical aspects of NGS from a bioinformatics perspective and its practical applications; the opportunities and challenges in NGS dedicated to NGS-related topics, bioinformatics, and data management will all be covered.
