  • (1888PressRelease) July 07, 2018 - Ripple Foundation is thrilled to announce the winning title of the 2017-2018 Kids Write 4 Kids (KW4K) Creative Challenge. Short story Mrs. Smafpaf by Emaan Ali, age 11, was selected as the winning entry by a panel of 12 judges. It is now available for purchase in digital format on Amazon Kindle, Apple iBooks, and Google Play, as well as in print format from Amazon. All proceeds benefit a charity of Emaan’s choice.

Inspired by a doodle of a woman she drew, Ali wrote Mrs. Smafpaf depicting a woman who knows how to heal gardens and decides to try her hand at healing a broken heart. Toronto-based illustrator, fine artist, and 2018 OCAD graduate Aliya Ghare illustrate the book based on Emaan’s character. Mrs. Smafpaf is dedicated to Emaan’s teacher at Bayview Glen School, Mrs. Smallbridge, who encouraged and helped her every step of the way.

The stories were selected by a judging panel, including three youth judges, all previous Kids Write 4 Kids winners; as well as several other Canadian authors. Describing the judging process, Esta Spalding, author of Knock About with Fitzgerald-Trouts, stated, “What a great pleasure to read these wildly various, vibrant, colourful, and original stories!” Casey Lyall, author of Shadow of a Pug, described the experience saying, “I quite enjoyed reading the stories from all of the Kids Write 4 Kids finalists. Each writer brought something new and exciting to the page. What I loved about MRS. SMAFPAF in particular was that it felt like I was reading an original fairy tale! I think all of the participants should be very proud of what they accomplished and I hope all of you keep writing!”
