Graham, podiatric surgeon and founder/president of the Graham International Implant Institute, presented research findings revealing a previously over-looked link in the development of peripheral neuropathy at the recent 2013 Annual Symposium of the Association of Extremity Nerve Surgeons (AENS),

    Dr. Graham's extensive research highlighted how excessive hindfoot motion can lead to misaligned feet in a relatively common pathologic condition where the talus (ankle bone) partially dislocates on the calcaneus (heel bone). Dr. Graham further explained that this condition results in the elongation of the very important nerve on the inner side of the ankle that provides sensation to the bottom of the foot, creating pain. While compressive forces acting on the nerves have been long recognized, an elongation of the nerve has never before been addressed.

    Diabetic patients frequently develop peripheral neuropathy and are often told little that can be done beyond masking their foot pain with potent medications that can lead to other side-effects. However, many of these diabetic patients also have talotarsal displacement (the hindfoot misalignment condition) and could be successfully treated if properly diagnosed. As a solution, Dr. Graham invented HyProCure®, a titanium stent that is inserted into a naturally occurring space between the ankle and heel bones in order to realign the hindfoot and decrease the strain on the nerve, which then allows for nerve recovery. The nerve recovery can reduce or eliminate the pain from peripheral neuropathy.
