  • (1888PressRelease) January 12, 2013 - Hong Kong - A testament to the growing interest in the sport across Hong Kong, students from Kwun Tong to Taikoo Shing, from Mong Kok to Aberdeen have all been part of the CIHL this season. The result is a cheering crowd, a growing fan base and, for some of the students, their first opportunity to watch live hockey.

The CIHL partners with a different school every game night to offer students complimentary tickets, courtesy of RBC, to attend the evening's double header. Students and accompanying teachers sit with CIHL players to gain better insight into the fast-paced, on-ice action. Every week, three students are given the opportunity to go out on the ice and take part in the Disney Shootout, with prizes courtesy of Disney.

The program is an ideal Hong Kong school excursion and an opportunity for educators to introduce students to ice hockey, while promoting the values of sport.

The 2012-2013 runs through March 16 and select dates are still available for interested schools, including:
    - January 26
    - February 16
    - March 2

Commented CIHL co-founder and director Greg Smyth: "The RBC Adopt a School Program is one of the CIHL's cornerstone community programs and one that all of the players are extremely proud to be a part of. Together with RBC, we have created a great platform for Hong Kong students to gain exposure to ice hockey and we look forward to sharing this great sport for the remainder of the season."

The RBC Adopt a School Program is fully customizable to suit students of all different ages and experiences. All game nights take place on Saturday evenings at Mega Ice on the 10/F in Kowloon Bay. Pre or post-game school visits with the RBC CIHL Intern Program interns available upon request.

This year, the RBC CIHL Intern Program welcomed Canadian Interuniversity Sport players Adam Maglio and Devin Welsh to the CIHL, who, in addition to playing in the elite league, have also been coaching youth hockey in Hong Kong. For both Maglio and Welsh, the opportunity to help develop Hong Kong's next generation of hockey players and fans has truly been an important aspect of their internships and one that they hope to expand upon throughout the remainder of the season.

"It's an honour to be able to share my experiences of hockey with students of all ages in Hong Kong, whether it is coaching young talents, speaking to a group of students in school or sitting with them to watch a CIHL game," said Welsh. "Hockey has played such an important role in my life and I look forward to any opportunity to share with students how any sport can be an essential and rewarding part of a person's life."

The CIHL has created an online and mobile community through its comprehensive league and team websites, as well as its free iPhone app, available at the iTunes store, which allows fans to access on-demand video clips, game highlights, photographs, statistics, schedules and player information.

All games are played at Mega Ice, with a game format of three, 12-minute periods of five-on-five hockey.

On Saturday nights from October, 6 2012 through March 16, 2013, the teams will face off at Mega Ice for two back-to-back games.
