  • Newark, NJ (1888PressRelease) September 05, 2018 - Three industry experts from Matrix New World Engineering recently spoke with WCTC radio host Bert Baron. Vice President and Marine Engineer Andrew Raichle, Vice President and Professional Engineer Paul Calabrese, and senior survey technical specialist Jose Vargas shared their involvement in the restoration of the piers and waterways of Puerto Rico that followed the devastation of Hurricane Maria.

Raichle gave an overview of the project. “The devastation was pretty intense. A lot of street lights were down, so at night it was very dark.”

“One thing that was very interesting was that the people were very upbeat, very friendly, very happy,” added Calabrese. “Very happy that Matrix was there to rebuild the ports. It was really nice to see how the communities were all working together to move forward.”

Yet, it was Vargas who was affected both professionally and personally by the unprecedented storm. “This was personal for me,” said Vargas. “Members of my family live there.”

But, Vargas was impressed by the country and the people who live there. “People saw Matrix as hope. The most beautiful thing was that these people are resilient. In a nutshell, people don’t care how much you know, they just want you to care.”

Hurricane Maria, the worst natural disaster to ever hit Puerto Rico and parts of the Caribbean, destroyed lives, infrastructure, and the economic lifeblood of the island. This past spring, the US Maritime Administration (MARAD) brought in the New Jersey-based Matrix, with its extensive history of restoration, including the BP Oil Spill in the Gulf and Superstorm Sandy in New York and New Jersey, to support multi-disciplinary damage assessments on commercial ports throughout Puerto Rico.

Matrix will be returning to begin work on the restoration of commercial and recreational areas in Puerto Rico. Please visit https://youtu.be/y63Hn-0V464 to view Matrix at work in Puerto Rico.
