  • (1888PressRelease) January 14, 2021 - CAMBRIDGE BAY, NUNAVUT, CANADA & WARSAW POLAND - Province Brands of Canada, the company behind a transformative technology for creating fermented beverages and sugars from any type of plant waste, today announced the signing of a legally binding agency agreement with one of Poland’s leading hemp research and medical technology companies, Hemp & Health S.A. (WSE: HMP).

The agency agreement will make Province Brands of Canada’s proprietary saccharification and brewing technologies available to brewers, beverage makers, food & beverage makers, and CBD/legal marijuana product manufacturers throughout Europe. Hemp & Health will have exclusive rights to represent the company in Poland, and nonexclusive rights to represent it in the rest of the continent.

“Province Brands is the partner that we have been searching for for more than a year. When we found each other, our negotiations were quick and smooth,” said Michal Hazubski, CEO of Hemp & Health S.A., noting, “The potential in the European market is much bigger than in Canada and the USA combined.”

Over the past two years, Province Brands of Canada has developed a patent-pending process for brewing beer from cellulosic plant material. This groundbreaking technology allows any food or agricultural byproducts to be turned into sugars for beverage fermentation or for sweetening food & beverage products. These sugars have fewer calories and lower glycemic index when compared to sucrose and most commercially available sweeteners. The technology also produces substantially less greenhouse gasses (both carbon dioxide and methane) than traditional brewing.

According to a 2020 report published by The Brewers of Europe, EU28 produces the second-largest volume of beer in the world, after China. But beer production produces a large amount of waste, mostly in the form of spent grain, that presents a huge environmental challenge. While efforts have been made to re-use or “upcycle” this byproduct, such uses have previously been confined to very small amounts in the form of livestock feed or niche food products.

Province Brands’ technology is capable of turning all of this waste into flavorful, low-calorie, gluten-free beers (requiring no grain or added sugar or starch) and plant-based sweeteners. The market potential is robust, both for breweries looking to adapt more sustainable practices and consumers seeking more sustainable products. Importantly, applications of Province Brands’ technology are not limited to spent grains. The company can process most other types of cellulosic plant waste including waste from the cannabis industry and agricultural waste from the food and forestry industries

Hemp & Health intends to introduce Province Brands’ technologies to brewers, food and beverage makers and legal cannabis operations with the goal of licensing the technology. Licensees may create products of their own design or produce Province Brands’ internally developed products and brands. These include Cambridge Bay Canadian Hemp Lager, a beer produced using Province Brands’ technology and brewed from only water, food-grade hemp, hops and yeast with no grain, starch or sugar used in the fermentation process.

Hemp and Health operates in the hemp industry and as the private label supplier, as well as the exclusive distributor, of the first Polish COVID-19 antibody and antigen tests to be produced in Poland from January 2021 onward.

“Hemp and Health is truly the ideal partner for Province Brands of Canada,” said Jennifer Dianne Thomas, Co-Founder & CEO of Province Brands. “Their focus on research and development matches our own and we couldn’t possibly be prouder to be working with a company that’s doing so much to help fight the COVID-19 global pandemic. I just can’t get over how similar our company’s ‘corporate DNA’ is to theirs. I believe this agency agreement will be just the tip of the iceberg, the beginning of many great collaborations between our two companies and our respective scientists!”

A primary focus of Province Brands’ research has been on producing beer from the cannabis plant and residual material from the legal hemp and marijuana industries. Recreational cannabis use became legal in Canada in October 2018. Though EU countries still face some challenges with regards to cannabis regulation, hemp beverages and beers are becoming more and more popular in Europe.

“Although recreational cannabis is not yet allowed in any European country, we signed our agreement just three weeks after the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU), the European Commission, decided that cannabidiol (CBD) will not be regulated as a drug and can be qualified as food,” said Hazubski of Hemp & Health.

More good news for the whole sector emerged in early December 2020: the UN has accepted recommendations made by the World Health Organization to remove cannabis from its schedule of the most dangerous drugs, effectively accepting the medical potential of cannabis.

“Both decisions recently taken by the UN and CJEU give us the basis to now estimate our target market as being even bigger,” Hazubski noted.

    About Province Brands of Canada
Province Brands of Canada is a beverage technology and branded products company that has created a patent-pending technology intended to create a better class of fermented beverages. For the first time ever, beverages can be brewed from non-starch plant material and most types of food waste. The technology results in beers that are low calorie, low in carbohydrates and gluten free. Brewers using the technology can experiment with new flavours and make beers from locally sourced materials, all the while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and waste disposal costs. Cannabis beverage companies can use the technology to make authentic non-alcoholic fermented beverages brewed directly from the industry's primary waste stream (stalks, stems and roots).

Province Brands of Canada's founding legacy is based in brewing, but as a beverage technology company it has also developed a proprietary process that derives clean, sustainable, and tasty sugars from non-starch biomass (including plant waste). Province anticipates that functional beverage companies will make great-tasting beverages that are sweetened with its sugar technology and is excited to serve both the beverage industry and beverage consumers with cannabis and hemp derived sugar extracts.
