  • San Jose, CA (1888PressRelease) May 25, 2018 - Prime Healthcare Foundation hospitals have once again been named among the nation’s 100 Top Hospitals® by IBM Watson HealthTM. Formerly known as the Truven Health Analytics® 100 Top Hospitals, the study spotlights the top-performing hospitals in the U.S. based on a balanced scorecard of publicly available clinical, operational and patient satisfaction metrics and data.

    Sherman Oaks Hospital and Montclair Hospital Medical Center in California, East Liverpool City Hospital in Ohio and Pampa Regional Medical Center in Texas were each honored as being among the best hospitals in the nation. Prime Healthcare hospitals have earned this national quality recognition 42 times.

    In addition, East Liverpool City Hospital in East Liverpool, Ohio was one of only 13 facilities in the nation selected for the prestigious Everest Award. The award means that the not-for-profit hospital has set the national benchmark for balanced excellence in a single year, and simultaneously been recognized for the greatest improvement over five consecutive years.

    “The country’s best hospitals have proven that an unrelenting focus on quality, supported by constant measurement against peer performance benchmarks, can drive improved outcomes while reducing costs and growing profit margins,” said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president, 100 Top Hospitals Programs, IBM Watson Health. “Congratulations to this 25th anniversary class of 100 Top Hospitals who have helped raise the bar for healthcare in the U.S. and improve the healthcare experiences of the people in their communities.”

    “Thank you and congratulations to all our physicians, nurses and staff for achieving this recognition,” said Prem Reddy, MD, FACC, FCCP, Chairman, President and CEO of Prime Healthcare and Prime Healthcare Foundation. “The fact that our hospitals are able to continue earning quality accolades year after year as our health system has expanded is a tribute to our commitment to clinical excellence for all patients.”

    The Watson Health 100 Top Hospitals® study uses independent and objective research to analyze hospital and health system performance in 11 areas, addressing: inpatient mortality; 30- day mortality rates; complications; core measures; 30-day risk-adjusted readmission rate; severity-adjusted average length of stay; mean emergency room throughput; inpatient expense per discharge; Medicare spend per beneficiary; adjusted operating profit margins; and Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) score (patient rating of overall hospital performance). The study has been conducted annually since 1993.

    Based on the results of this year’s study, if all Medicare inpatients received the same level of care as those treated in the award-winning facilities:

    More than 102,000 additional lives could be saved;
    More than 43,000 additional patients could be complication-free;
    More than $4.4 billion in inpatient costs could be saved;
    Approximately 200,000 fewer discharged patients would be readmitted within 30 days;

    The 152-bed East Liverpool City Hospital, located in the Tri State area of eastern Ohio, has been recognized over the years for its quality patient care, most recently receiving Healthgrades recognition for patient safety and 5-star recognition for the treatment of Heart Failure, Sepsis, Respiratory Failure and Pneumonia. Prime Healthcare Foundation acquired East Liverpool City Hospital in 2016 and has invested more than $4 million in facility improvements.

    Sherman Oaks Hospital, a third-time recipient of the 100 Top Hospital award, is a 153-bed notfor- profit member of the Prime Healthcare Foundation serving the needs of the San Fernando Valley in Los Angeles, CA. The hospital offers programs such as The Center for Reconstruction and Wound Healing, Certified Stroke Care and a Geriatric Psychiatry program serving the unique needs of seniors. The team at Sherman Oaks made quality patient care its top priority, achieving national recognition from US News & World Report as a “Best Regional Hospital” and the patient safety excellence award from Healthgrades.

    "Prime Healthcare is honored to be recognized for our commitment to clinical excellence in the service of our patients. We continually strive to deliver compassionate, quality care to every patient and every community," said Sunny Bhatia, MD, Chief Medical Officer for Division 1 of Prime Healthcare which includes Sherman Oaks Hospital, Montclair Hospital Medical Center and 15 other hospitals in California and Nevada. Dr. Bhatia also serves as CMO of Sherman Oaks Hospital.

    Montclair Hospital Medical Center in Montclair, CA, is receiving the Top 100 Hospital recognition for the third time. The 102-bed, not-for-profit community hospital, a member of the Prime Healthcare Foundation, has also achieved outstanding quality and patient safety recognition from multiple organizations including The Leapfrog Group, Healthgrades, and The Joint Commission.

    Pampa Regional Medical Center in Pampa, Texas, is receiving the Top 100 Hospital recognition for the first time. The hospital has 115 beds and serves residents in the Texas Panhandle with high quality care, most recently receiving an A for patient safety from The Leapfrog Group.
