  • (1888PressRelease) July 18, 2010 - KANSAS CITY, MO. - As Deepwater Horizon oil spill clean up efforts continue in the Gulf of Mexico, BP has captured about 657, 300 barrels of oil. Now, BP believes it has capped the leaking well. But the clean up effort continues.

Workers are moving fervently to protect the shoreline of the Gulf of Mexico, and to collect and clean up any oil that has reached shore. According to BP, approximately 44,500 workers, more than 6,563 vessels and some 113 aircraft are now engaged in the response effort. The cost of the response to date amounts to approximately $3.12 billion.

"The damage caused by the Gulf oil spill, the worst offshore oil spill in U.S. history, has been steadily increasing since April," said John Finnessy, CMP, Executive Director of the National Portable Storage Association, an industry association dedicated to the advancement of the portable storage industry. "As time goes on, more organizations are mobilizing their clean up efforts. Portable storage can help."

Time is of the essence to protect wildlife. In a few weeks, millions of waterfowl and other migratory birds will begin their fall migration to wintering and stopover habitat along the Gulf Coast. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, among others, are working to anticipate and minimize the impacts of the Deepwater Horizon/BP oil spill on these birds. Modified portable storage units can be rented and transported to clean up the oil and tar balls that make their way on shore. This is an affordable, quick and more secure alternative than tent setups.

"Whether it's wildlife rescue workers or some other type of clean up effort, portable storage units can be modified to serve as on-site offices for workers," says Joel Rathbone, Operations Manager for the NPSA. "Complete with air conditioning, these units can offer workers a break from the grueling sun in regions affected by the oil spill, as well as safe place to store equipment and other goods."
