  • Charleston-North Charleston, SC (1888PressRelease) July 30, 2012 - Most teenagers feel like they don't belong at one point or another. Sonya Garrison knows she doesn't belong. With a love of classical music and ballet, she doesn't fit in at home, the projects of Venton Heights, and as one of only a few black students, she certainly doesn't fit in at Bridgeton Academy.

    The Dancing Dream Series
    By Leslie DuBois:
When Sonya Garrison is accepted into Bridgeton Academy, she soon discovers that rich girls are just as dangerous as the thugs back home…maybe more so.

Leslie DuBois, pen name of Sybil Nelson author of Priscilla the Great, felt exactly the same way. Growing up poor, she still had a love of learning, dance, and music that set her apart from her peers which often led to painful consequences. Sonya, like Leslie, doesn't let this stop her. She is determined to one day be a prima ballerina. To help reach her goal, she cleans the dance studio in exchange for ballet lessons which is exactly what Leslie's mother did for her when she was a child.

"Role models for young Black teens are egregiously lacking in Young Adult novels," says DuBois. "I hated going to the library and having to go to a separate section to find books with girls that looked like me on the cover. It felt like a form of literary segregation."

The Dancing Dream series consists of The Queen Bee of Bridgeton, The Devil of DiRisio and The Saint of Petersburg (release date August 2012). Written with humor, heart, and hope The Dancing Dream series offers teenagers a heroine with whom they can laugh, cry, and dream.

Leslie DuBois is the pen name of Sybil Nelson, author of the Priscilla the Great series. Even as a child growing up in the low-income housing, Sybil seemed to know that education and a love of reading would someday be her ticket to bigger and better things. Now a mother of two and pursuing a PhD in Biostatistics from the Medical University of South Carolina, Sybil is also founder of Little Prince Publishing and a successful author of two book series for young adults.
