  • (1888PressRelease) July 07, 2012 - With over 3000 schools participating in the famous Lagos GTB Principal’s Cup this year, and the Heritage Cup, featuring only the traditional schools known with the Principal’s Cup, the participants believe that the introduction of the GTB Super Cup has once more rekindled the old, healthy rivalry among the Lagos schools.

Though Dairy Farm Senior Secondary School won the maiden Super Cup, the runner-up, Anwar Ul-Islam College, was also calm in defeat at the end of the glamorous tourney held at the Campos Stadium in Lagos Island.

Most of the players and coaches believe the Super Cup idea will encourage more schools to participate in the championship, especially the private schools in Lagos. For Dairy Farm’s Stephen Odey, who was the most valuable player of the competition, the Super Cup gave his team the opportunity to confirm its superiority among other schools in Lagos.

Odey, whose dream was to play for the national team, lauded GTB for its commitment and innovation since it took charge of the championship, stating: “I am happy that we are the first team to win the Super Cup, while I was also the first player to be named the MVP of the championship.

“This will surely go into history. I want to thank GTB for giving my school and myself the opportunity to inscribe our names in the annals of Lagos State school sports.

“Apart from this, the Super Cup has also given some of the private schools the chance to participate in the competition, which had always been dominated by public schools in the past. We look forward for new things, as the championship continues to produce players for the country.”

Like Odey, one of the coaches, Bala Madaki, commended the organisers for giving the students the opportunity to showcase their talents, noting: “It is good that students are given the chance to exhibit their talents outside the classrooms, and this was made possible by the efforts of GTB.

“I think other corporate companies should also take a cue from this by sponsoring other sports in schools. But for us at Diary Farm, we will remain grateful.”

Meanwhile, GTB General Manager/Head of Communication and External Affairs, Lola Odedina, said the financial institution was committed to helping the revival of school sports.

She said: “The commitment of GTB to bring back the nostalgia associated with our secondary school developmental football and the opportunity to breed the feedstock for our national soccer teams are the crux of this competition.

“We appreciate the enthusiasm and passion of our sports masters and principals of all the first generation secondary schools, private schools and Lagos State.

“Our facilitators, the Lagos State Ministries of Education and Sports, have been outstanding towards the successful execution of the 2011/2012 championships and are the reason we have got this far in making our aspirations a reality.”
