  • Ann Arbor, MI (1888PressRelease) April 25, 2012 - Online Tech announced today a new authentication offering for all clients currently utilizing a Virtual Private Network (VPN) that will enhance the security of their data and applications.

Online Tech has teamed up with Duo Security to provide a simple, mobile phone-based authentication method that is much more convenient and easier to use traditional two-factor systems.

The security measure adds an extra layer of protection to their critical files by requiring a secondary authentication method of their choice to achieve network access - by using push authentication, a smartphone passcode, text message or phone call. Normally, a user would use a username and password to log into their VPN, which typically allows access to sensitive data.

"Two factor authentication is one of those items that really covers all facets of the defense in depth model (people, technology, and operations)," said Steve Aiello, Senior Systems Engineer & CISSP at Online Tech. "As security becomes more of a requirement then a luxury simple technical solutions, married to strong operational processes will have a huge impact on the security of digital data. This is a wonderful first step that companies take in securing their assets and client's personally identifiable information."

While two-factor authentication has been standard operating procedure for the Online Tech operations and support team, it was only recently that Online Tech decided to extend the service to all colocation, managed server, and cloud hosting clients and implement two-factor remote authentication across the entire company - even outside the operations team.

"Security is not about a specific technology or device," explains Yan Ness, CEO of Online Tech. "Security is an attitude to be applied to every decision. By implementing a simple two-factor authentication policy across our entire organization and offering the service to every client, we are better positioned to understand and help our clients who have security and compliance as top priorities."

Two-factor authentication is an important security measure for all companies concerned about the privacy of their data, and is required to meet PCI DSS compliance. All companies storing, transmitting or processing cardholder data are required to implement two-factor authentication for remote access of their network.

This new offering is just one more addition to Online Tech's legacy of ongoing focus on compliance and security, including independent SAS 70 Type II, SSAE 16 Type II, SOC 2, HIPAA and PCI audits to ensure security, privacy, and availability of their clients' data.
