  • Newark, NJ (1888PressRelease) November 29, 2012 - Esteemed Garden State business publication NJBIZ has named Miles Berger, chairman and chief executive officer of The Berger Organization, as an Executive of the Year finalist in its 2012 Business of the Year awards program. Berger has been a key player in the City of Newark during the past three decades and was among the first to anticipate - and contribute to - its revitalization.

Award recipients will be announced on Monday, Dec. 3, at the Palace at Somerset Park in Somerset, N.J. "The Business of the Year awards program celebrates New Jersey's most dynamic businesses and business leaders who share a commitment to professional excellence, business growth and community," wrote NJBIZ Publisher Thomas F. Curtin in an email to award finalists.

The Berger Organization is a privately owned diversified real estate company with more than 1 million square feet of commercial space and 12 hospitality properties in Northern New Jersey and New York City. Berger, credited as a visionary for Newark, purchased the company's first property there in 1976. Since then, his deep appreciation for the city's rich history and personal, unwavering commitment to restoring Newark's past brilliance has led to concentrated real estate acquisitions, the employment of more than 300 local residents, and ongoing involvement in project and programs that support progress there. Today, half of The Berger Organization's portfolio is located in Newark, on Park Place and Broad Street.

NJBIZ finalists and winners were chosen by an independent panel of judges including: John S. Buzza, Monmouth University; Gerald Creighton, Sr., MBA, NJIT Enterprise Development Center; John Farrell, Rider University; Donald N. Lombardi, Ph.D., Stevens Healthcare Educational Partnerships Stevens Institute of Technology; and Dr. Kathleen Reddick, College of St. Elizabeth. Event sponsors include Eisner Amper, LLP, CIGNA and Sun National Bank.

"Being selected as an NJBIZ finalist truly is an honor because it not only recognizes our organization, but also acknowledges the incredible evolution of Newark as a destination of choice for business, shopping, dining, entertainment, sports and culture," Berger said. "Today, just as we predicted so long ago, Newark is on the cusp of becoming a true metropolitan center, where people come to work, play and live."
