  • (1888PressRelease) February 10, 2011 - LAS VEGAS - Nevada Heart and Vascular Center announced today the center has become the first practice in Southern Nevada to offer patients the Positron Emission Tomography (PET) test, the latest cutting-edge technology in cardiac stress-testing.

Dr. William Resh, a cardiologist at Nevada Heart and Vascular Center, says PET has a 95 percent accuracy rate in identifying early stages of heart disease. This makes PET the most reliable non-invasive cardiac stress imaging technology available to us at this time.

"Early detection of heart disease is a critical component in saving patients' lives," said Dr. Resh. "PET imaging is much more effective at detecting cardiac disease and will make a dramatic difference in our ability to treat patients before their conditions become severe."

According to data collected by the Kaiser Family Foundation, heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. Nevada ranks above the national average and leads the western states in heart disease-related deaths.

Dr. Resh says extreme stress can double the risk of developing heart disease. In 2010, Forbes Magazine named Las Vegas America's most stressful city.

"It is no surprise valley residents are also at the highest risk in the country for developing heart disease at a young age," Dr. Resh said. "Las Vegas' high unemployment rates, heavy traffic and long working hours contribute to many patients' high stress levels and poor heart health. Combine this with a sedentary lifestyle which includes smoking and alcohol consumption and you have a perfect recipe for heart disease before age 40."

In recognition of American Heart Health Month, the cardiologists at Nevada Heart and Vascular Center are urging people in Southern Nevada to monitor their stress levels.

Dr. Resh says that while lifestyle and genetics contribute equally to heart disease, there are things people can do to significantly cut the risk of developing heart problems. Resh says people who are concerned that they are at risk should check with their insurance providers to determine if they need to visit their primary doctors before getting an evaluation from a cardiologist.

"We encourage people to take control of their health and future. Wellness starts with getting checked out before problems start, not waiting until you are sick and need a specialist," he said. "New technology, such as PET, gives us the ability to detect the warning signs and beginning phases of coronary artery disease. The early detection, followed by treatment, can help in the prevention of long term damage and heart attacks."
