  • Newark, NJ (1888PressRelease) October 17, 2014 - Jill A. McCracken, Retired Teacher at Holmdel High School, has been selected as an Honored Member of the National Association of Distinguished Professionals.

    Jill A. McCracken began her career in teaching in 1983 after graduating from the College of New Jersey with a degree in history education and teaching certificates in social science and psychology. Hired at Holmdel High School, Ms. McCracken taught World Civilization, AP Psychology, US History I and II, European History, Holocaust and Genocide Studies, International Relations, Issues in American History, Sociology, Economics, and Human Geography.

    For over 30 years, Mrs. McCracken successfully taught at an exceptional NJ academic high school that has been consistently been in the top 10 New Jersey public schools. She has achieved 98% or better on AP Psychology exams, three times the national average, has written curriculum, taught NJEA teachers, administered state-mandated tests, completed evaluations and assessments of student achievements, served on numerous committees, organized various programs, including the Adopt-a-Platoon program and the Toys for Tots program, in addition to many other duties.

    Prior to becoming a teacher after completing her degree, Mrs. McCracken did an internships at the Center for Holocaust, Human Right and Genocide Education (CHHanGE) at Brookdale Community College with Dr. Seymour Siegler and Professor Jack Needle, the founders of the Center. She was fortunate to have great mentors and professional educators to inspire her.

    "These men changed the course of my life, giving me the goals of making the world a better place by educating the children about the consequences of apathy and being a bystander," Mrs. McCracken said. "It all began there. I never left, attending literally hundreds of workshops. I graduated from attending to doing the workshops for them. I joined the board of directors, serving for about 25 years. I taught teachers how to teach Holocaust and Genocide studies for over 25 years and still do as the NJ Holocaust Commission needs me."

    Mrs. McCracken also completed an internship at the US Mission to the UN during her sabbatical on completing her MA in Diplomacy and International Conflict Management from Norwich University. She is a current Museum Fellow with the US Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC, became a Fellow at the US Institute of Peace, studied abroad at Yad Vashem, the Israeli Memorial and Holocaust Center in Jerusalem, and even spent time in Kosovo a year after ethnic cleansing and the NATO war there. She was also fortunate enough to accompany the NJ State Department of Education's Holocaust Commission trip to Europe for educators on the Holocaust. Mrs. McCracken also participates in election observation missions with the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE), traveling to countries such as Azerbaijan, Kyrgyzstan, and Ukraine.

    Throughout her career, Mrs. McCraken has earned numerous awards, including the 9/11 Tribute Center Educators Award, a Johns Hopkins University Award for Excellence in Teaching, a Fellow with the US Institute of Peace, a Caesarea Lodge 64 Award, a District 17 Masonic Lodges Educator of the Year Award, a Holmdel Journal Educator of the Year, among others.

    Mrs. McCracken's husband is currently working toward his PhD at the University of Pennsylvania and they will likely be residing locally for a few more years. She hopes to perhaps work part-time in the Pennsylvania Department of Education, an NGO or ADL. She would also consider teaching again part-time at a local community college in her area of expertise.
