  • Columbus, OH (1888PressRelease) September 06, 2014 - Kevin A. North, Owner and Engineer for Fire Design and Engineering LLC, has been selected as a VIP Member of the National Association of Distinguished Professionals. The selection recognizes Kevin A. North's commitment to excellence in Engineering.

Kevin A. North, who is NICET Level IV certified since 2009 and is a BSEE graduate of DeVry University, began his career in the alarm industry working for Simplex Time Recorded Company in 1998. He was hired as a field technician installing fire alarm detections systems in commercial facilities and gained knowledge of fire detection systems, small security systems, nurse call systems and sound systems. After transitioning into the company's engineering department and working as an engineer for three years, Mr. North then worked for Siemens as a fire alarm engineer, followed by a position with Johnson Controls Inc., as a regional engineer, before he lost his job in October 2010 due to reduction in the workforce.

Now the owner of Fire Design and Engineering LLC, Mr. North engineers and designs fire alarm detection systems for commercial clients. He prepares drawings, completes the required calculations, stamps the drawings for the building department and fire marshal for review and approval. He also contracts work from SimplexGrinnell, Siemens, Johnson Controls, and several other smaller and/or local companies.

"Once I started in this field I saw the importance of this type of work. The more I learned the more dedicated I became, and the more experience and knowledge that I gained over time made me feel obligated to make a change in this field," Mr. North said. "The reasons behind starting my own business were a matter of circumstance. After watching the market decline, I saw an opportunity to contract with large companies that were not hiring, but still needed personnel to complete the work in their backlogs."

Mr. North is a member of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and is the treasurer for his local chapter of the American Society of Certified Engineering Technicians (ASCET). He is also a member of the National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies (NICET). Level IV certification requires 10 years of experience in the field and knowledge in fire protection engineering technologies/fire alarm systems, all which required testing, major project submittals, a verifier of application, and a professional recommendation. In addition, it is required to have knowledge of fire, electrical, elevator, mechanical, and all codes that are applicable in the engineering or designing of a fire alarm detection system. Mr. North is approved and permitted by many states to stamp these types of drawings.

With hopes of growing his business to the next level, Mr. North wants to take on more jobs across the country and lessen the need for outsourcing of engineering in other countries. Mr. North is excited for the future growth of his business.
Currently, Mr. North holds a Recognition Award from Siemens for his work on the Honda Liberty Plant in Marysville, Ohio.
