  • Nashville, TN (1888PressRelease) January 27, 2011 - In the month prior to a recent National Survey on Drug on Drug Use and Health, an estimated 49,000 Tennessee children between 12 and 17 had used an illicit drug. Fed up with statistics like this, a group of Scientology parishioners decided to help rid the state of this problem by launching its own Drug-Free Tennessee campaign this past weekend at an event held in their church.

"We are proud to support the Foundation for a Drug-Free World here in Tennessee," says Rev. Brian Fesler of the Church of Scientology, "Our parishioners are dedicated to helping kids grow up drug-free and we've got the tools to do that."

The church parishioners will be working with the Tennessee chapter of the international organization: Foundation for a Drug-Free World. The Foundation runs programs to educate and advocate against drug abuse on a global scale, delivering its "Truth About Drugs" message through public service announcements, fact-filled booklets and a 13-part documentary about the most commonly abused drugs as described by former addicts.

Sgt. Suzanne Stephens, Community Coordinator for the Metro Nashville Police Department's South Precinct, spoke at the event: "Drugs have an impact and touch you whether you know it or not…so where do you begin?" In answer to this, church members came up with an action plan to create a Drug-Free Tennessee. "What we are putting here is a group who can spread the truth about drugs in every part of the state," said Rev. Fesler. "The group will be distributing booklets and making the materials available to anyone who wishes to forward the anti-drug message. It will also put on seminars and workshops and continue to support the state's law enforcement agencies and any other organization working to prevent drug abuse."

In the past year alone, more than 219 million people have received the Truth About Drugs message from the Foundation's global program. Over 164 million people have viewed the Truth About Drugs public service announcements and 21 million have viewed the Truth About Drugs documentary in the past twelve months alone.
