  • San Francisco, CA (1888PressRelease) November 04, 2011 - Media Innovations Summit (MIS), the premier new media strategies conference, and NAGRA, the world's leading independent provider of content protection and multiscreen television solutions, are enabling conference attendees to experience next-generation TV first-hand through interaction with sessions using NAGRA's OpenTV Participate platform. Taking place at the Santa Clara Convention Center Nov. 30-Dec. 2, Media Innovations Summit will offer audiences true interactivity with its powerful roster of speakers representing the convergence of entertainment, content distribution, funding, advertising and new media technologies.

NAGRA's OpenTV Participate, now widely used in TV shows aired by NBC, USA, Bravo and other NBC Universal networks, will enable session audiences to engage and interact with senior industry executives via cell phones and tablets. Comments and poll results displayed on the big screens at MIS will provide audience members and speakers alike a continuous feedback loop to enliven the conversations with much broader perspective on topics.

"Incorporating the Participate system into last year's MIS program resulted in an eye-popping level of audience engagement that greatly enhanced the conference experience for everyone involved. Engaging viewer audiences across multiple platforms via new and inventive content strategies is the core theme of our annual event, making Participate's contribution an ideal complement and must-have for our upcoming November conference," said Fred Dawson, editor and CEO of ScreenPlays Magazine, producers of Media Innovations Summit.

NBC Universal has used Participate to aggregate and deliver comments and polling results in live broadcasts of shows such as NBC's "The Voice," "Heroes" and the 2010 Winter Olympics, USA's "Burn Notice," Bravo's "Top Chef" and Oxygen's "Bad Girls of Miami." The server-based Participate system can process thousands of transactions per second in real time. This allows a personalized interactive experience to be delivered to the widest possible audience by broadcasting the call to action over the air to all viewers and allowing them to interact by whatever means is available to them: smartphone, tablet, computer or set-top-box. Participate does not require embedding of special client software on set-tops or other devices. It provides the backend support for collecting responses simultaneously from all chosen platforms, triggering calls to action on air, integrating graphics and text with live program feeds and managing respondent data capture for CRM campaign purposes.

"We're seeing more and more producers understanding the power of interactivity and putting it to creative use in ways that add to the appeal of their programs," said Paul Woidke, Senior Vice President and General Manager of Advanced Advertising at NAGRA. "We're glad we can provide executives attending Media Innovations Summit the opportunity to directly engage in this new viewing experience."

Interactivity is one of many unique aspects that make MIS an event like no other in the new media and communications space. Leading figures from the network services, content and technology sectors will shed light on new developments destined to have a major impact on the consumer experience in the years ahead. Senior players in Hollywood's emerging UltraViolet electronic marketplace will reveal rollout strategies for the holidays and beyond. Advances in automatic content recognition, ITV, 3DTV, navigation, advertising and social networking will be revealed for the first time in conference sessions and on the exhibit floor.

MIS will also feature the Window on Tomorrow Youth Symposium, where young people and experts will compare research findings with real-life experiences in entertainment consumption, social media usage and education, uncovering new approaches to augmenting classroom instruction.
