  • New York, NY (1888PressRelease) May 06, 2015 - Montclare Children's School, an acclaimed private preschool located in Manhattan's Upper West Side, NYC, presents its first ever annual Montclare Film Festival along with the collaboration of Writopia Lab. The film festival will be held from May 18, 2015 to May 20, 2015 and will feature short films created by the preschool's four-year-olds along with the guidance of Writopia Lab staff. Families of the existing students of Montclare Children's School are welcome to attend the film festival.

Montclare Film Festival will showcase 3-4 films each day, created by each of the 3 classrooms for 4-year-olds. The films have been shot using iPads and digital cameras that were hand-held or hoisted on tripods. The duration of the film is between three and six minutes. Students were extensively guided by Writopia Lab staff.

Montclare Children's School has been known to strive towards integrating developmentally-appropriate technology into their preschool curriculum. Montclare Children's School parent and founder of Writopia Lab; a nonprofit creative writing program for children of ages 4-18, was approached by Montclare Children's School with the idea of piloting a film-making program with a group of 4 year old students. The pilot program proved successful and filmmaking was made an integral part of the preschool program for four-year-olds starting from fall, 2014.

The movie created during the pilot program was screened at Montclare's 'Curriculum Night' in October, 2014 and, apparently, the positive response led to the idea of hosting a full-fledged film festival from the following years.

The filmmaking program is aimed at developing pre-literacy skills in children apart from encouraging the understanding and use of age-appropriate technological devices. The process of filmmaking involves the process of creating and narrating a story as well as listening to other people's story ideas. The practices of storytelling and story reading aid the development of pre-literacy skills such as developing vocabulary and language, improved listening skills and improved story comprehension and retention.

Some of the films being featured at the Montclare Film Festival include "Magic Swimming Pool"; a film in which children playing in a pool are sent on an adventure wherein the pool magically transforms into an ocean, "Tiger Movie"; a story about a tiger who uses several vehicles to travel the world in order to find her lost teddy bear and "Chicken Nugget the Shark" that features Chicken Nugget who is a young shark fond of eating stinky shoes rather than fish and ventures out of the ocean to visit a shoe store.
