  • (1888PressRelease) July 18, 2012 - Awarded the World Building of the Year 2011 at the prestigious World Architecture Festival, Vector Foiltec's Media TIC is a testament to the evolving nature of design, sustainability and technology. Selected from 16 finalists to win the highest accolade in global architecture, MediaTIC utilises Vector Foiltec's Texlon® ETFE to facilitate eco-efficiency in cutting-edge design.

Commissioned by The Consortium of the Zona Franca CZFB and 22@ Barcelona District, the building provides office space for large and emerging companies as well as public space for exhibitions, workshops and events. The 22@ District is part of an experimental network with a focus on shared ICT between new and existing businesses. Offering 16,000m² of commercial space above ground and 7,100m² below the surface, the total building volume forms a cube of 44m x 44m x 37.82m high.

Designed by Cloud9, MediaTIC uses 2,500m² of intelligent Texlon® ETFE cladding on both the South East and South West facades. The individually climatic controlled ETFE cushions of the East façade receive an average of six hours of sunshine a day and use Vector Foiltec's Texlon® Vario system to optimise solar gain in any climate - opening in winter to increase solar energy gain and closing in summer to reflect heat.

The South West façade incorporates Texlon® Cloud - where Vector Foiltec generates a Nitrogen based fog - which acts as a solar filter by means of the dense, opaque gas particles between two layers of Texlon® foil. These mechanisms along with Vector Foiltec's temperature, humidity and pressure sensors in the facades have very low operating costs and ensure MediaTIC's eco-efficiency.

Up to 95% CO2 reduction through the use of clean energy (20%), the implementation of a photovoltaic roof system (10%), Vector Foiltec's Texlon® ETFE cladding (55%) and the use of energy efficient smart sensors for temperature, humidity and pressure (10%), MediaTIC's phenomenal green credentials are a tribute to innovative design and technology.
