  • Fort Lauderdale, FL (1888PressRelease) November 06, 2021 - Meals on Wheels South Florida is proud to announce that it has recently been awarded a $10,000 grant from FedEx in support of its new Senior Companion Tablet Program. Meals on Wheels South Florida is one of the largest of five thousand Meals on Wheels programs across the country working every day to protect older adults from the threats of isolation and hunger. This effort is made possible by generous donors and volunteers who help strengthen their efforts to provide nutritious meals and safety checks to homebound seniors.

The Companion Tablet Program will enable Meals on Wheels South Florida to provide its homebound clients with a state-of-the-art large screen device, allowing them access to services that may have not been readily available before. The Claris Companion™ is a contemporary communication device that helps promote self-managed care for seniors in their homes, including activities to stimulate their minds, and calendars to keep them organized with medical appointments.

Designed to enable seniors with little or no computer experience to stay connected and live independently, the Claris Companion™ offers video calling with physicians and family members, medication reminders, large-scale games, wellness checks and more.

“We are so grateful to FedEx for awarding us this grant to launch such an innovative program for our homebound seniors,” said Mark Adler, Executive Director of Meals on Wheels South Florida. “With the Claris Companion™, we can make it easier for our homebound seniors to stay connected and healthy. This is truly a game-changer in reducing social isolation for our clients.”

Members of the community are invited to get involved with Meals on Wheels South Florida to help further the mission as they continue to serve South Florida’s senior population. Individuals or corporations interested in volunteering or donating can learn more at mowsoflo.org.
