  • (1888PressRelease) February 18, 2011 - In 1933 a French Tennis player named Rene Lacoste and knitwear manufacturer Andre Gillier developed the perfect pique polo from a mesh like sweatband material first designed by Gillier. The innovation worked and was designed in an array of colours, changing the face of tennis and sports for the better, moving away from the white long sleeve shirt and trousers to the polo and eventually to the shorts.

This groundbreaking innovation led to the first Lacoste 1212 polo t shirt to be designed and released into the market place, becoming a must have fashion piece some eighty years after the first ever polo shirt was released. The now famous logo came about from one of two explanations. One was due to his tenacity on the court and another a nickname given to Rene Lacoste while we has playing a tennis match, he bet his team captain that he would win a certain game, with the prize being a crocodile or alligator skin suitcase that he had seen while playing in America. Lacoste won and with it earned the name 'the crocodile' with his friend then embroidering a logo on his t shirts and sportswear. It is unclear however whether the logo is a crocodile or alligator as a French advertising agency ran with an advert in the week of his death with 'See you later...' in English underneath, this is a reference to the saying 'See you later alligator, in a while crocodile' with fans left to make their own mind up as to the true logo.

Leading men's designer clothes retailer Mainline Menswear now stock every single range available in both the Lacoste clothing and footwear. The signature crocodile logo is now massively famous around the world and brings with it an assurance of both quality and style with the leading designer brand available at most good mens and ladies clothing retailers. Lacoste counts Armani, Fred Perry, Polo Ralph Lauren and Tommy Hilfiger as its main rivals, with all appearing at Mainline Menswear. With this steady rise in popularity has come the need for more colours, more designer clothing and a supporting range of lifestyle products such as Lacoste luggage, sunglasses, watches and aftershaves not to mention the belts, caps and sweatbands all adding to the mix of the brand and the range available. The brand is branching out further away from Tennis and fashion with Golf and Sailing ranking highly within the brand.

Lacoste is set to be massive in 2011 with the expected growth of the brand both inside and out of Mainline Menswear, with the excellent range of clothing, t shirts, trainers, flip flops and plimsolls all complete with signature logo, available and ready to be 'snapped' up!
