Los Angeles International Wine Competition Announces Winners

  • (1888PressRelease) June 26, 2016 - A 2013 Cabernet Sauvignon and a 2014 Pinot Noir received the highest score of the Los Angeles International Wine Competition, recently held at Fairplex in Pomona, home of the LA County Fair. Encore Cellars, Cabernet Sauvignon, Heritage Vineyards, Lodi, 2013 and Jim Palmer Vineyards, Pinot Noir, California, 2014 tied with 98 points and a gold medal each, the highest rating of the 3,000-plus entries of the competition.

    Several wines and sakes received points from 97 to 95, garnering gold medals, with a variety of varietals earning gold medals.
    Judged in May using a point system, the wine competition saw 3,010 international wines tasted. Many varietals and price ranges were represented, with the point system acknowledging each varietal's special attributes and providing a level of precision in the competition's wine ranking systems, a benefit for the competition and wine enthusiasts. Wines were tasted by an international panel comprised of judges ranging from Master Sommeliers to chefs to wine writers. There were a total of 168 Best of Class Awards, 572 Gold Medal Awards, 1,271 Silver Medal Awards and 736 Bronze Medal Awards.

    The competition received wines from 23 countries; Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Bulgaria, Canada, Chile, England, France, Georgia, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, New Zealand, Portugal, Romania, South Africa, South Korea, Spain, Ukraine, Uruguay and the United States of America.

    The public will get its first opportunity to taste the medal-winning wines at Cheers - L.A's Wine, Spirits, Beer & Food Festival June 25. Cheers features the award winners from all the Los Angeles International Competitions (beer, wine, spirits and extra virgin olive oils) as well as gourmet food trucks and dancing. Winners will also be available for tasting at the LA County Fair, Sept. 2-25. The Fair features a complete wine education program taught by industry experts.
