Literacy Week was observed with great interest, excitement, and energy in the primary and middle school classes at The Infinity School. Students across different age groups were engaged in a wide range of literacy week activities conducted in the classrooms. As one of the best schools in Noida Extension, The Infinity School planned this weekly observance to raise awareness about literacy, develop students’ interest in reading, and encourage excellence in learning languages. These activities helped learners understand how the knowledge acquired from books can be applied to real-life contexts and used for honing other skills. E.g., imagination, creativity, design thinking, language, vocabulary, communication, expression, etc.

Several student-led activities were organised as part of the literacy week initiatives, to raise awareness about the importance of reading, comprehension and to inspire learners at The Infinity School to make reading a part of their daily routines. Like E.g., Crosswords, Puzzles, word games were done to enhance the vocabulary of the students in a fun way. Story Writing to enhanced the creativity and teamwork skills of learners, as they worked together to come up with an interesting story. Book-mark making to encouraged readers to set goals and track their progress in a fun way., and more.

Circle times in the morning involved activities that aimed at enhancing students’ vocabulary, grammar, and knowledge of languages. Students of gr. III to VIII grouped together in their classrooms to solve trivia, puzzles & word games (like Pictionary, spell bee, and crosswords based on punctuations, poetic devices & story elements).

The Hindi class encouraged creative expression & independent thinking in students. Primary grades participated in ‘Matra ki yatra’ activity, which focused on the importance and use of diacritics. They also indulged in poetry recitation, proverb trivia and created their own tongue twisters and riddles. Middle school students improved the art of creating questions and quiz.

The English class focused on expanding students’ research, design thinking, and reading comprehension skills. Collaborative story writing & reader’s theatre were the main highlights of the literacy week.

Reader’s theatre was an engaging activity for Gr. III students who enjoyed reading stories with different voice modulations. It helped learners identify changing moods and expressions of book characters through dialogue delivery, thereby improving their listening, observation, and reading skills. Middle school students learned about autobiographies and story writing. They participated in book cover designing, probed facts on famous authors/poets, and answered questions around them. In addition, collaborative story-writing activity encouraged learners to build on their coordination and teamwork skills. Learners contributed a random number of words in each sentence to form an impromptu story.

The Infinity School offers French, German, and Sanskrit as third languages in the middle school grades. Students of Gr. VI to VIII learned more about global cultures and differences in language structures in this class. They also designed bookmarks showcasing famous proverbs in French, German, or Sanskrit languages.

Reading class gave students an opportunity to learn more about their friends and surroundings. Renowned polymath and Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore was chosen as the ‘author of the month’. Students probed facts on his major contributions to literature & education, discussed his writing styles, and read some of his famous works. Gr. III & IV enjoyed the activity ‘Bookmarking your friend’ in the school library, where they created bookmarks highlighting the special qualities of their friends. They also used their imagination to design their Superhero Avatar and took turns to speak on how they would solve social problems with their imagination and problem-solving capacity.

For a developing nation like India, literacy is one of the most crucial 21st-century skills. To be future-ready, literacy has to step beyond rote learning and writing to comprehension and appreciation of factual or literary literature. Building literary skills at an early age would encourage children to seek out information, express views, and gain a deeper understanding of the society and the world.
