  • (1888PressRelease) January 18, 2011 - Georgia was affected by the multi-million egg recall, with producers taking eggs off sale to try and contain the outbreak.

The current methods, which are outlined in the FDA's Bacteriological Analytical Manual, take up to 10 days to reach a result, allowing for a significant margin in the disruption of the supply chain to prevent widespread contamination. The new test can provide conclusive results in 27 hours.

The method uses a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in real-time, as opposed to traditional techniques, which rely upon growing the bacteria from a sample in a laboratory environment.

“The faster turnaround time to reach accurate results with this new molecular test not only enables egg producers to easily conform to the FDA’s new stringent testing standards, but also helps limit the negative economic impact associated with SE outbreaks,” said Gene Gregory, President and CEO of the United Egg Producers.

This quicker testing method was initiated by the implementation of the Federal Egg Safety Program, which came in to force in July 2010, requiring all large scale egg producers - who represent 80% of the US egg market - to test for and ensure the safety of products before they reach supermarket shelves.

“We are pleased to have received the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s acceptance of our TaqMan® Salmonella enteritidis Detection Kit, which now provides producers with a much faster and effective method for testing eggs,” said Peter Dansky, President of Molecular & Cell Biology for Life Technologies.
