Many employees had to transition to remote working at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. This created a myriad of questions as to which items were allowed to be considered work related expenses that qualified for tax deductions.
Despite working from home, employees cannot deduct a home office. Karu explained, “Employee business expenses as an itemized deduction were eliminated with the 2018 Tax Act. If you were self-employed, then home office expenses would be allowable as an expense on Schedule C.”
