  • Boston, MA-NH (1888PressRelease) August 22, 2012 - Johnny Monsarrat will speak for the first time to the business secrets that led to his company being acquired for $160 million, pending a vote by attendees of Mass Innovation Nights on September 12 in Boston. The MIT entrepreneur was founder and first CEO of Turbine, Inc., the videogames company that makes Lord of the Rings Online and was acquired by Warner Brothers in 2010.

"First you need focus," Johnny Monsarrat said, "to connect your competitive edge to revenue. Then you need to get noticed by key players who can help you bootstrap. But reading books and even getting my MIT MBA didn't teach me some of the creative and surprising ideas that I had to invent on my own." Monsarrat has packaged these ideas into a lecture to be presented, based on community votes, at one of Boston's most prestigious entrepreneur gatherings.

According to Johnny Monsarrat his methods apply both inside and outside of the high-tech spectrum. His new company, Hard Data Factory, used them to develop a suite of tools for Twitter that can grow any stream to 20,000 followers without junk followers - accounts that aren't real people or who have no interest in the Twitter feed. He used them when it came to developing Asheron's Call, which pioneered massively multiplayer online roleplaying games (MMORGs).

"It's all about incentives," Monsarrat said. "In Asheron's Call, older players had already killed all the dragons and explored all the caves, and would beat up newer players because they were bored. So I designed an incentive system that gave older players a new role: to mentor new players, who would in turn give them a cut of their fake money earnings in the fantasy game. Solving this problem caused our membership to soar. You can find these win-win scenarios in every business situation."
