  • (1888PressRelease) August 18, 2011 - The semantic microblogging tool, miKrow, developed by iSOCO, has received the prize for the best applied research product in the eighth Extended Semantic Web Conference (ESWC2011), the most important annual Semantic Web event in Europe which this year was held in Crete (Greece).

miKrow is the result of two years of research by the company's own R&D centre, iLAB, on intelligent access to information applied to a business environment. miKrow's main innovation is the incorporation of semantic searching into a microblogging system, which enables information to be indexed so that users can be provided with relevant messages according to the content that is entered.

In addition, it uses Linked Data to enrich the results obtained and contextualise them according to various criteria such as location. iSOCO has therefore created not just an internal microblogging application, but also a powerful semantic instrument to facilitate knowledge management in organisations.

The initiative emerged from an internal call for proposals in 2009, through the Open Ideas platform, and although it has been developed at the iLAB R&D centre, it is a product of the contributions of the whole company. Moreover, it has gradually matured thanks to the various European research projects that iSOCO participates in, related to the increase in the productivity of knowledge in business, such as ACTIVE.

The iSOCO general manager, Javier Aróstegui, has underlined that miKrow "is a product of our work on Linked Data, an area in which we have made a considerable effort in recent years, as demonstrated by our impetus and leadership in the Spanish Linked Data Association (AELID) alongside the Polytechnic University of Madrid (UPM), and which represents the natural evolution of the Semantic Web".

In fact, testifying to the fact that research into the Semantic Web is currently on a high in Spain, the UPM received the prize for the best research article at the same ESWC2011 conference, for its study on the creation of a system capable of querying the Data Web, the new access protocol for information sources.

    How it works
miKrow is a microblogging system that indexes messages semantically, so it is capable of recommending content of interest to the user when related information is entered. Sources of expert information are also suggested according to their potential for interaction: the greater the number of messages of interest created, the more a user will be considered an expert in a given subject. In so doing miKrow promotes the generation and circulation of knowledge by giving visibility to the organisation. The solution is completed with contextualised information that filters the expert content according the user's location and with Linked Data, which adds external related information.

The prize awarded to iSOCO reasserts the company as an international leader in semantic technology and artificial intelligence. miKrow is also a good example of its technology transfer model, of the laboratory internal to the market, aimed at helping companies improve their position in the Network Economy.
