  • (1888PressRelease) September 26, 2012 - The Montreal Protocol which was originally signed on 16 Sep 1987 and substantially amended in 1990 and 1992 stipulates that the production and consumption of compounds that deplete ozone in the stratosphere are to be phased out in a specified time period. Scientific theory and evidence suggest that, once emitted to the atmosphere, these compounds could significantly deplete the stratospheric ozone layer that shields the planet from damaging UV-B radiation.

On 19 December 1994, the United Nations (UN) General Assembly proclaimed 16 September every year to be observed as the International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer to commemorate the same date in 1987, on which the Montreal Protocol on Ozone Depleting Substances - ODS was signed.

ODS are widely used in refrigerators, air-conditioners, fire extinguishers, in dry cleaning, as solvents for cleaning electronic equipment and as agricultural fumigants. Some of the top ranking ODS in India today are ChloroFluoroCarbons (CFCs), Halon, Carbon Tetrachloride, Methyl Chloroform, Methyl Bromide, HydroBromoFluoroCarbons (HBFCs), HydroChloroFluoroCarbons (HCFCs), BromoChloroMethane (BCM). HCFCs are both ozone-depleting substances and powerful greenhouse gases: the most commonly used HCFC is nearly 2,000 times more potent than carbon dioxide in adding to global warming.

To mark this occasion, well known environmentalist Dr L K Dadhich gave a talk on issues pertaining to Global Warming at Sangam University Bhilwara on 17 Sep 2012. Executive Director of Sangam India Mr VK Sodani urged the students and faculty to see opportunities and challenges in the crisis unfolded by climate changes. Prof BR Natarajan President - Vice Chancellor Sangam University highlighted the significance of the day and gave an overview of the ODS. Office bearers of Giants Group of Bhilwara - Saheli also took part in the celebrations. The Dhanwantri Park with medicianal plants located in the adjoining Sangam School of Excellence was also inaugurated by Prof Dadhich. The Green Club of Sangam University coordinated the proceedings for the day.

It is indeed high time for all to remember Environmentalist Jim Fowler quote - Our challenge for the future is that we realize we are very much a part of the earth's ecosystem, and we must learn to respect and live according to the basic biological laws of nature.

Sangam University Bhilwara supported by Sangam Group of Industries which is one among the top ranking corporates in India today with business interests spanning textiles, steel, infrastructure, power and energy has been established by Govt. of Rajasthan Act No. 14 of 2012 incorporated u/s 2(f) of UGC Act 1956.
